Console Graphics Better Than Expected

By Ace of Knavez - 23rd April 2011 - 13:16 PM

DICE's Patrick Bach talks consoles and next-generation, in an interview with computerandvideogames.com. Bach believes their upcoming Battlefield 3 has reached the potential of technology for the next five years. That is the case for PC, unfortunately not for consoles, their tech is almost five years old, one of the main reasons DICE have been ranting about them "holding PC games back". Still, according to Bach; Battlefield will be the best looking games on consoles come this fall.

Battlefield 3 looks amazing from what we've seen but so far everything's been shown on PC. Is it going to look as good on console?

That's always hard to answer. We need to show pictures of it to make sure that when people see it they can judge for themselves. There are of course technical advantages with the PC. PC: brand new technology; Consoles: five year old technology, so of course there will be differences. Our job is to make sure that the core and the emotion of the game is exactly the same. We're not trying to build a lesser game on console. The interesting part is since we have the stretch goal of creating something amazing on PC, scaling that back to console gives us an advantage because we actually see stuff being run on the console today in Battlefield 3 that looks so much better than we anticipated just because we're aiming so much higher rather than trying to build a console game based on the competition or our latest game. We're building it aiming for the stars. We're seeing some really cool results.Source: computerandvideogames.com

I personally think that DICE have been pretty shady about consoles during this month. It's great that they are finally making a game with all the power behind the PC, but I reckon they will have left many console users feeling unsupported. Bach leaves light at the end of the tunnel for consoles during this interview though, and there is also questions surrounding Battlefield 3's attempts to take number one spot.
