Nazgul Micromanagement

By NadeDawg - 21st April 2010 - 02:52 AM

Introduction

The Nazgul are very unique units in Middle-earth. Their role exceeds that of regular cavalry, besides cutting swaths through opposing archers and swordsmen, they also have a supportive role.
Due to their high speed, low health, and vulnerability to any kind of massed damage, Nazgul require special attention. Losing a Nazgul by carelessly trampling through pikes en route to enemy archers will oftentimes cost you the game, so you must be extra cautious.

Overview

Cost: 1100
Command Points: 40
Build Time: 40s
Health: 1650
Speed: 107 (60 unmounted)
Damage: 150 (Hero) / 60 (Crush)

Nazgul are tier one heroes that come at a low price, low command points, and a low build time. However, they lack damage, health, and armor. When mounted, Nazgul should be kept away from pikes and mass archer fire, but when dismounted they are extremely vulnerable to cavalry and swordsmen. In general, heroes are a big threat to Nazgul, and they can be knocked down as well.

Nazgul easily compensate these weaknesses with their high speed, heavy trample, and agility.
Interestingly, their trample damage (60 Crush) is not very high, but their debuff to opposing units greatly boosts their damage output, as does their very low crush deceleration, allowing the Nazgul to trample through units for a greater time before slowing.

Number Your Nazgul
Nazgul are very fragile and have low health, and due to their speed they crush themselves into opposing pikes and get into uncomfortable situations very quickly. Therefore, they should be under constant observation. It is best to allot a number to your Nazgul. Choose your Nazgul and press 'Ctrl + #'. If you have more than one Nazgul, you can either give them different numbers or move them as a group and have them share one number. Press the given number on your keyboard twice to jump to your Nazgul. You should check the condition of your Nazgul every few seconds.

Nazgul are a universal unit, being useful in nearly all scenarios, making them worthwhile investments in almost every game. Be careful against Isengard, however, since Uruk Pikemen move at the same high speed as the rest of Isengard's infantry, making it quite easy to defend against a Nazgul. Nazgul excel against low-health archers and swordsmen, like those of Elves, Goblins, and Men of the West. When facing Dwarves, your Nazgul should usually be dismounted, unless hunting down Battlewagons. In mirrors Nazgul often tip the scales due to the heavy harassment in this match-up. They can also defend well against Orcs and harass the opponent's economy.
