Tip of the Week #27: RPGs

By Fender - 27th July 2008 - 23:12 PM

RPGs are shoulder mounted anti-vehicle weapons, used for firing rockets with an attached explosive warhead capable of penetrating any kind of armor, ideal against tanks and vehicles. The term "Rocket Propelled Grenade" is a loose transliteration of the Russian word "реактивный противотанковый гранатомёт". (translated: Reaktivnyy Protivotankovyy Granatomyot).

This specific form of RPG that appears in Call of Duty 4 is the RPG-7. The effectiveness of this weapon has made it the most widely used anti-tank missile in the world for its simplicity and and inexpensive cost to manufacture. It the most accurate at 50 m but still retains doable precision at 200 m. Originating in the Soviet Union in 1961, this beast of a rocket is still in use by many armed forces across the globe.

Building Your RPG Class

RPGs are set in the first perk slot, so this eliminates the possibility of selecting more popular perks such as Bandolier, x3 Frags, or x3 Specials. Some things to ask yourself before you consider a class based around RPGs are:
  • Do I really need the extra ammo Bandolier gives me? Am I constantly wasting ammo by missing targets or by spraying?
  • Do I need extra grenades to clear rooms? Am I a constant grenade spammer?
  • Do I like having my back covered by claymores?
If you answered yes to any of those question you might want to become more comfortable in your playing style without using some of those perks. While RPGs are beneficial in their own regard, they obviously do not reward you with anything immediate. You have to work to be successful with an RPG, but it isn't something that is impossible, and you can have fun while doing it.

The Primary

Firstly, I suggest using a weapon where you have plenty of reserve ammo, stock. Because Bandolier is no longer available you will need a lot of stock ammo. A Light Machine Gun is the obvious choice, but there are other alternatives that can be used as well.

Ammo sharing

The MP5 and Mini-Uzi fire the same round size as the M9 pistol (see Tip of the Week #15 for more). For a 'free' Bandolier select either SMG with the M9 as your secondary. The pistol ammo will automatically convert for use into your primary weapon.

Don't use an Assault Rifle or Sniper for several reasons. One, the stock ammunition for both classes is relatively low. Only go for one of these if you're comfortable with swapping with a weapon on the ground once you run out after a long kill streak. For example, a weapon like the M4 Carbine, which has an extremely low ammo reserve, would be a very poor choice seeing as Bandolier is not available for the needed additional ammo. However, in fast-paced games and on some maps this doesn't become as important as you'll be dying with shorter kill streaks, so take this into consideration.

The Perks

It goes without saying that with an RPG class, you're going to need RPGs from perk slot one. As for a second perk you really have three options, depending on the primary weapon you choose to use.

If you decide to go with an LMG as your primary, take Sonic Boom as a second perk. Because of the high damage that an LMG gives you Stopping Power is not as necessary as it would be on other weapons. Because you are building an RPG class, Sonic Boom will increase the blast radius of the explosive shell released from the rocket.

If you decide to take an SMG you have a tough decision. Stopping Power is the obvious choice for a less powerful SMG, like the P90. However, a more powerful SMG, like the MP5, Sleight of Hand is a great choice. The speed at which you can reload your RPG shell is dramatically increased, allowing you to fire both of your shells at a single target, should you miss with the first one. This can become extremely handy if you find yourself missing sometimes or if you're taking long distance shots more often.

Of course, still feeling comfortable with your primary weapon is very important in your overall confidence when using an RPG, so take a second perk that your playing style is most suited to.

The Tactics...

...Or lack thereof.

Using RPGs really don't require a ton of skill. Rather, it requires knowledge of your current situation and when it would be best to use an RPG instead of another weapon in your arsenal.
  • Be smart
Know the general positions of the enemy and recognize the best times to use an RPG. This is where checking your UAV minimap becomes very important.
  • Be accurate
Accuracy comes with practice. Knowing effective ranges on specific maps will aid in your dominance with the RPG. Firing an RPG across an entire map will generally never result in anything positive. If anything, you only make your position more visible to enemies from the large plume of smoke trailing back to the area you fired it from. In fact, this is the main reason why you save RPG shooting near the end of your ammo reserves as enemies are always finding their way to your location from the smoke.

  • Target properly
Realize that you don't need to hit directly on the enemy for a kill. Just getting the rocket in the vicinity of your target will result in a kill. Shoot at walls and floors for quick engagements.

And of course, aim for explosives such as cars and barrels. Enemies using a car for cover don’t stand a chance when you fire a rocket at it. Not only do you get the explosion from the rocket, but it is also multiplied with the car's blast radius too!

A Chopper's Worst Nightmare

If you have the RPG perk equipped, there is no reason to be saving them if there is an enemy helicopter in the air. However, you need to be patient and wait for the right moment to fire your rocket. Don't just go shooting them off in the general direction of the helicopter, you'll never hit it.

Don't do what this image illustrates. Wait for the helicopter to begin hovering. Avoid shooting a rocket at it while it is still flying around.

Wait for the helicopter to begin hovering overhead and aim slightly in front of it, towards the cockpit. Generally the RPG tends to tail off at longer ranges and it will curve back and hit the helicopter directly underneath. Hit it once more, or put a couple of magazines into it with your primary to watch it go spiralling out of control into the ground!

Have Fun

Realize that using RPG's is just for fun and should never to used too seriously or in a competition. It is a fun way to break away from the ordinary and try something new.

Now you know the basics, so get out there and use your ROFL Rockets to the fullest!
