Single player

Russian ultranationalist, Imran Zakhaev, wants to return his country to the times of the Soviet Union by means of force. As he plans a takeover by stockpiling nuclear weapons, he cleverly diverts attention away from him and to the Middle-East by funding a rebel uprise led by Khaled Al-Asad. Unfortunately for Zakhaev, the British S.A.S. and United States Marine Corps understand what's going on and deploy to stop both threats.
The story was written by Hollywood writers and spans 20 different in-game missions. A bonus mission is available after completing the main campaign.
As a player, you take control of Sergeant 'Soap' MacTavish of the 22nd British S.A.S. and Sergeant Paul Jackson of the 1st Force Recon, USMC. You also play as other characters in the game during cutscenes or to take a different perspective.

Multiplayer

Equally or more enjoyable than the single player experience, Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer offers you a range of different game modes and a unique class system. After reaching level 10 in a 55-level ranking system, you are awarded with the ability to create your own kits to be used in action.
A class consists of 1 primary weapon, 1 secondary weapon or handgun, 1-3 fragmentation grenades, 1-3 special grenades (max 1 smoke grenade) and 3 perks. Perks enable your soldier to use special weapons or abilities on the battlefield.

Slot 1 Perks
C4 x 2: 2 C4 explosives and a detonator are up for use.
Special Grenades x 3: Have 3 flashbangs or stun grenades. Cannot be used if a smoke grenade is present in your class setup.
RPG x 2: This perk gives you 2 RPG rockets and a launcher. Great for taking down helicopters.
Claymore x 2: Equips you with 2 M18A1 Claymore mines. As directional anti-personal mines, these can fortify a position or protect you when sniping.
Frag x 3: Gives you 2 extra fragmentation grenades.
Bandolier: Supplies you with extra ammunition for your firearms.
Bomb Squad: Enables you to see enemy explosives such as C4 or Claymores to help you avoid them.

Slot 2 Perks
Stopping Power: Increases the damage done by your bullets.
Juggernaut: Decreases the damage done to you by enemy fire or explosions.
Sleight of Hand: Quickens the time it takes to reload your weapon.
Double tap: Increases your weapon's rate of fire. Is still effective for semi-auto guns and shotguns.
Overkill: Let's you have two primary weapons. An example would be a class that has two assault rifles but no handgun.
UAV Jammer: Prevents you from appearing on the enemy UAV unless you fire a weapon with no silencer.
Sonic Boom: Increases the damage done by explosives.

Slot 3 Perks
Extreme Conditioning: Let's you sprint for twice as long.
Steady Aim: Increases your accuracy from firing from the hip.
Last Stand: Drops you into a low-health state with only your handgun instead of immediately dying. Does not work if you died from a head-shot or an explosion.
Martyrdom: When equipped, this perk drops a live grenade for you whenever you die even if you got shot in the head or died by an explosive. The grenade has half the fuse time of a normal one.
Deep Impact: Allows bullets to travel through penetrable objects and walls easier.
Iron Lungs: Increases the time you can hold your breath while scoping down a sniper rifle. Does not work with the ACOG attachment.
Dead Silence: Decreases the sound you make when moving allowing for an easier time sneaking up on someone.
Eavesdrop: Gives you the passive ability to listen to the enemies voice communication through VoIP within 30 metres.

Game modes
Free-for-all: Attack everyone else, there are no teams. Respawns are quick.
Team Deathmatch: Two teams are pitted against each other in battle to reach the score limit first or have the highest score at the time limit. Respawn times depends on server, typically within seconds.
Headquarters: One team must destroy the HQ while the other has to set it up and defend it. One team gets points over time for defending and the other team gets points for destroying.
Search and Destroy: One team must plant a bomb and will score if the bomb detonates or kill the entire opposing team. The other team must defuse that bomb or kill the enemy team before it's planted. No respawning until the round is over.
Domination: Each team must fight for the majority of the map by controlling more areas over time. Flags are captured by holding the position for a set amount of time.
Sabotage: A bomb is placed in the middle of the map and must be detonated in the opposing team's base. It is a battle to carry it over across the map and if the bomb-carrier gets killed, the other team can take it for themselves.

Technology
The proprietary game engine used to power Call of Duty 4 is capable of rim-lighting, bloom, HDR lighting, dynamic shadows, object physics and depth of field among other capabilities such as ragdoll physics. The developers have been careful to maintain a steady rate of 60 frames per second to keep the gameplay smooth on console versions - PC players will have to adjust settings according to the power of the computer.
The respawn system prevents players from appearing in the line of sight of another player on the opposing team and far enough away to give you a chance to escape except in rare cases where no other spawn points are available on the map.
Gun sound effects were recorded at a real-world shooting range and are intended to be as true-to-life as possible.
