Welcome to a new Tip of the Week!
It's been quite a while since we last made one public. Have you ever been annoyed by predetermined, illogical hotkey allocations? Have you always wanted to change a specific hotkey of a certain unit? Here is help!
Step 1 Download and install XCC-Mixer from
http://xccu.sourceforge.net/Step 2Start XCC-Mixer, click on 'File' in bar on top and open 'English.big' in the DNS-Directory. On the top left stands now 'generals.csf'. Select 'generals.csf', right-click and choose 'Extract'... As directory you specify 'C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\Data\english'.
The 'generals.csf' file will be stored in 'C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\Data\english' now.
Step 3Now click on top of your XCC-Mixer on Launch > XXC String Table Editor > Open and open the previous extracted 'generals.csf' file.
Step 4Now select anything (most that you need stands in control bar) in the lefthand menu. To the right you can see now various strings. In those are all the texts and hotkeys.
When the icon: & is displayed, it means that the following letter is a hotkey. When you finished your editing, click on 'Ok' and close the XCC-Mixer.
Note:
If you do have the German game version you can proceed exactely the same way. Only difference is you need to extract the file "generals.csf" into the following game folder: "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\Data\german2".
(Note that if you have installed the game in another directory use this one!)
Step 3 and 4 have to be followed the same way as given above.
Important now is that if you use a German keyboard layout (or a foreign one in general) you should know that the game will always think you have an US keyboard installed.
So make sure the hotkeys you wanted to set consort with the US keyboard layout (most important difference is the transposition of the "Y" and "Z" key).
May your new hotkeys give you a better micro/marco management!
