GLA Technicals Guide

By xFactor - 13th February 2008 - 19:18 PM

This was an old Tip of the Week I wrote when I was strategy mod, but was too long for a Tip of the Week and too short for a guide. So I lengthened it a bit and put it into a guide. It's pretty basic stuff, mainly for those starting out with GLA and for better players, its good to brush up on a few things. Like in all my guides if anyone disagrees with/wants to add something, please post and we can discuss it. Thanks to Scotsman for getting this from the staff forums.

Technicals

Technicals are the greatest early game asset to the GLA in all matchups. They are cheap, quick, and when upgraded can cause serious damage. However it is important as a GLA player that you do your best not to waste them. For example do not send a terrortech to a warfactory and blow up the technical along with the warfactory just cause you were too lazy to get it out of there or chase humvees across the map because you are frustrated. Don't misunderstand, technicals can be used as excellent distractions / sacrifices just make sure you have a plan in mind when you do so.

GVC

In this matchup, technicals can be scrapped up to form a devastating unit, but the question is how do we use them to the best of our advantage. In Gla vs China I only upgrade my technical once to grenade technical because a grenade technical is your greatest defence against a gatling / tankhunter next to Jarmen Kell. It is important that you upgrade multiple techs to increase your fire power against tankhunters, and in case 1 of them dies. A good china player will not give you many opportunities to upgrade your technicals so take advantage at every chance!! I also like to hotkey them as well to make sure I know where it is at all times and DO NOT lose these at any time. I would rather have a gatling / tankhunter rip through my primary supply (providing i have 2ndary supply) then lose an upgraded technical in that situation. A good way to upgrade your technical is to load up a technical with rpgs and drive to a supply truck, take out the supply truck and upgrade your technical. Remember: Most chinas build 3 supplies, and will try to guard as many as possible. I like to TRY to attack the middle supply trucks 1st, then 2nd supply, then primary. By then you should have at least 1 upgraded technical and then the gatling / tankhunter is countered. Another way of using techs in a gla vs china is to get 2 or 3 and when the tankhunters are all lined up and run them over. (This is sacrificing, not wasting) This gives you ample time to regroup build a few more tunnels, get scorpion, or even upgrade a technical.

In a gla vs gla matchup I try to upgrade my techs as far as they go because a 4 promotion missile tech can be very devastating to your opponent. There most important use for techs in this matchup is supply harassment. Running over workers is so easy and so devastating, and if you can do it constantly, you will win the game. I like to send my 1st technical from the arms dealer straight to the 2nd supply to run over workers, then if its still alive, I run over the workers from the primary supply. Don't forget terrortechs are very effective too. I like to terrortech supplies as much as possible. Arms dealers can be difficult to terrortech because it take 5 terrors. If you can pull this off, it will give you a huge advantage and is sometimes viewed as a cheap win. Techs can also be used in this matchup to counter terrortechs or Technicals filled with rpgs. To do this take 1-2 techs and try to drive along side the opposing technical. Don't worry about locking onto it as the techs will automatically fire. When driving alongside another technical try to force it to one side of the map. Make it change paths and angles as much as you can; kinda like when your playing defence in a basketball game.

Technicals showcase their biggest advantages in gla vs china. As most USA players know, a group of upgraded techs can KAPOWN USA. The key is getting that "group," and to get that group u must have to be a smart microer and really do your best not to waste any techs. Technicals filled with rpgs are your best bet to get them upgraded. The key though, is not to chase the rockvees, but to get the rockvees chase you. Try to get the techs wedged between the rockvees when you do this and splash damage will kill the rockvees for you. Another way is to unload multiple techs from a tunnel to scare the USA away. Get as close as u can while the rockvees are turning and unload the rpgs, then drive straight into the humvees so that you block them from running over your rpgs. You will use a few techs in the process but the few that survive, will reap many benefits!

I tried to make an SS of good micro vs USA, but I'm not sure if I illustrated it good enough.

Technical Tactic

Load a technical with 1-3 terrors and drive into a pack of enemy units, as soon as the technical is destroyed, highlight all the terrors and press "x" this will this will destroy all enemy units with in range and can be very devastating especially if your opponent isn't expecting it or is distracted. This can work in all matchups but probably works best in gla vs gla.

Another way to do this is the way cypher described. Try to get your opponent to chase your technical with 2-3 terrors inside, let him get close enough to destroy the technical and then unload your terror(s) it's not as important to press x in this situation because you will want your opponent to run directly over it. Once again the splash damage will devastate all the units in that area. I find this way to more difficult especially against more skilled players. A lot of them will begin to expect it once they see it and find ways to kill the technical and dodge the terrors. This is why your timing is SO crucial and it takes practice to get perfect at it.
