Tip of the Week #59 - Sniper Teams

Get prepared to deal some nice headshots as these Snipers go about doing what they do best, i.e., kill infantry with a one shot kill and a double whammy on the Commando’s forehead, in case he forays within their scope. Best part of all, they are ‘Stealthed’, prowling and aware of any presence of any type of Infantry, including the dreaded Zone troopers. If you see your opponent spamming Zone troopers, then just get those Snipers out and watch the Zone troopers fall under the impact of their 303 caliber bullets. Their stealth is another bonus as it provides you with some additional abilities.

Let us discuss them:
  • They cost 1000$
  • You need to place an Armory first.
  • They can then be trained from the barracks
  • There is no upgrades available for the Sniper team (unless you have a Tech center placed and call in your Sharpshooter team which comes with a veteran status).

The best anti-infantry counter of GDI, the Snipers can gain Veterancy quite quickly by simply massacring Infantry of any faction, be it Nod or Scrin. If your enemy is another faction other than GDI and trying to amass infantry, the second they hear the ‘snap’ of a bullet whizzing past one of their teams, as they fall back with a clean hole through their head, they know they are up against ‘Snipers’ and that’s why Snipers are feared by all. However, be aware, in case your opponent too is GDI, then he could easily counter your Snipers as well by micromanaging them nicely or using them along with APC’s.

Snipers have less armor against damage, though their hit points are massive. Always keep an eye on their health meter. You should know that an injured Sniper team can be made to heal at your Armory. If you see a mass amassment of any sort of infantry, like Riflemen, Militants, Buzzers or Grenadiers, then it would be advisable to combine your Sniper team with a good mix of your own Riflemen and Missile squads as well. Be careful not to take them close to APC’s or Pitbulls though, specially APC’s with Sniper into who can easily detect and wipe them out. Snipers are used best against a faction with a low amount of units like Zonetroopers / Shock Troopers / Shadow team or even a Commando. A combination with an APC works pretty well too and will extend the shooting range of your Snipers. (write below). With the APC/Sniper, you can use ‘call for Transport’ ability and drop them near your enemy's troops, especially if your poor opponent builds only Missile squads from a single Barracks.

Snipers once unearthed, cannot do anything against a vehicle except run for their lives! So remember to keep a lookout and make sure you micro your Sniper, when you see a lot of anti infantry vehicles like the APC / Gunwalker or a Raider buggy. Remember, Snipers are good only against Infantry. You can of course use your own tanks and other arsenal at your disposal to wipe out any anti-infantry vehicle to protect your Snipers to do their work unabated.

The Sniper has another ability: Bombardment

The Sniper team can be micro’ed stealthily inside enemy territory whilst you train out Juggernauts. Any structure or vehicle within sight of their vision can signal Juggernauts to start bombarding any target you chose within that periphery. This is extremely useful and devastating to your opponent, as the Snipers are stealthed and the Juggernauts, practically invincible, are bombarding from the safety of their own base. Exercise caution when doing this though, as a Watchtower could sprout up and/or an APC would be doing the rounds. Also remember, once the Sniper sends this signal to the Juggernaut, he becomes unstealthed, so be wary.

You can also garrison your Sniper inside a building to increase his vision and obviously, the target radius. This can prove very uncomfortable for your opponent.

Snipers can also detect stealth. This gives you another added advantage to plan your counters accordingly.

In case you don’t want an armory or the situation does not warrant one, you can still call in a Sharpshooter team, which comes with a veteran status, provided you have the Tech center placed and of course if the need arises. In either case, the simplest way is to place an Armory as this can also pave the way for you to upgrade your other Infantry prowess.
