Tip of the Week #36 - GDI Support Powers

By -iceblade^ - 31st December 2007 - 19:15 PM

In many replays, several mistakes seem to come up time and again concerning the use of GDI's support powers. Hopefully, this will stop you from making those mistakes and get the most bang for your buck on the battlefield.

Orca Strike Power

Designed to be used against buildings but often used against groups of vehicles instead. This often means that buildings get repaired instead of being destroyed. It works best in tandem with other air assaults; use it to finish off weakly armored buildings, and be sure to call it in early, maybe even before you actually bring in your main assault force. Note that if you do so, it will take out a Nod or Scrin Tech Center if used with 4 Orcas – the GDI Tech Center is more resistant to the rocket damage caused by the Orcas, and so it would probably be better to use Firehawks on it instead. You could also try using it to knock out an enemy's Explorer/Surveyor - this will help if your opponent has done an ecoboom BO, as you can set back their economy pretty severely with the loss of their expansion early on. Another good combo is to use the Radar Scan in conjunction with the Radar Scan to hit weaker targets.

Radar Scan

If used correctly, this can save you a ton of hassle and recoup its low cost many times over. Perhaps a good, if not expensive combo would be what I call the GDI Power Combo; unstealth a weak part of your enemy base, perhaps a Tiberium Field, and then use the Shockwave Artillery whilst you drop in some Zone Troopers to pick off choice targets. Use it whenever conventional scouting isn't appropriate, or just to keep tabs on your opponent's production, but be sure to use it often. A good idea is to use it to uncover your enemy's Explorer in tandem with calling the Orca Strike Power.

Shockwave Artillery

No matter the situation, this power alone makes the Space Command Uplink well worth building. All too often, though, it isn't followed up properly, and this makes it largely inefficient. Have some sort of anti-armor unit on hand to clear up EMP-affected units; Railgun Predators, Zone Troopers, or Orcas will fit that role well. Also, use it for it's EMP effect and not for the blast damage; the blast damage is too little to be truly useful. In addition, you need to make sure that you defend your Space Command Uplink against any attacks; it will be a high-value target in the later game...

Sharpshooter Team

Too often this isn't used to support armies lacking anti-infantry support in the field, leading to pointless casualties from units such as Fanatics or Shock Troopers. Drop them behind your forces and move the snipers forward when required. Also try dropping the Snipers near an enemy base and use them as spotters for Juggernauts located in your base. Be careful, though; on occasion, a well-placed Buzzer Swarm or Cloaking Field can lay waste to your expensive Snipers.

Zone Trooper Drop Pods

All too often these are dropped into areas with heavy anti-infantry defences, and that wastes them. Use them where they can be effective, eg, next to a Tech Center or Tiberium Chemical Plant. Also consider using Shockwave Artillery to neutralise ground threats or AA Firehawks for Venoms/PACs. Another good way shown in the Kane Edition DVD is to provide a distraction or support to a Commando. Finally, it can be used to shut down power (and therefore more nasty Tier 3 defenses) whilst a group of other units (Predators or Missile APCs) makes a frontal attack.

Bloodhounds

Best used in a fast harassment role at undefended enemy expansions (the bottom green Tib fields on Tournament Rift are usually a good example). Be sure that the path to the drop point is clear of enemy AA; drop them closer to home and move them to the target if this is the case. In the late game, also try putting Zone Troopers or Missile Squads into the supplied APCs and get the Mortar upgrade for added punch. Alternatively, you could use the new Orca Bloodhound Rush strategy; combining the APCs with Engineers and using them to Engi-APC the enemy whilst you harrass his Harvesters with the Orcas and Pitbulls.
