Bad news is the site is inevitably going down. But DolphinRider is kindly giving us the access to the code so that's good news. With source code publicly available, any community member can pick up the pieces of the web site and hopefully bring it back to life.
at this point every one knew this was inevitable...
i think its made in PHP... if DolphinRider is kind enough to provide any documentation he made along with the code it can make a transition as painless as possible.
i'll atleast take a look at it and see what i can do.
Would be nice for someone to pick it up, maybe even turn and put more work into it and into Clan Wars. So far the site is helpful and with the code and attachments, you can make the clan wars better and more fun to play.

Why? Was the site not making money? I didn't see an appeal for donations. Anyways, I'm very interested in the PHP source too, plus some of the formatting things they had. But there isn't anything specific I want to copy-use, except the query layer for GameSpy servers, maybe.
maybe a combined effort would be a wise decision? if we do a combined effort however we'd need a chain of command and structure. the best software is made with a military management structure.
lol, poor little prawn, just go back to your crappy shed will ya?
Oh and tell me the secret to your alien weaponry.
No! And don't try to buy me with cat food, the name is RedPawn not RedPrawn

Yes, a concerted effort would be much preferable than forking the project each on our own.
As for how to organize that effort, I'm not sure what you mean by "military management" but seeing that, at first, we'd be less than a handful contributing on a voluntary basis, I'd recommend a more community driven and Open Source approach.
In any case we'll need to set goals, define a project life cycle and assign responsibilities to be successful.
Maybe we should have some kind of meeting this weekend to talk about how each of us can contribute and share ideas?

a big part of this thing is the contents of the database. we can't really have a 'community operated database' .... because i think whoever pays for the serving up of all this data is going to want to be considered the owner of the data and may want to generate ad revenue from it in some way. from that perspective there would be a "command and control" structure in place.
but you are correct about the code... a community driven open source coding project could be good.

I agree, the "business" part of this project correspond to a specific implementation of the code. So yes in that aspect it can't be open for all to decide and change. Although we could imagine a way to release a dump of some part of the data on a regular basis... but that's thinking too far ahead

well also... we can split the project in 2 parts... data.. and code. code is open source... data is not. the information, database structure, indexes and some sample data can be placed in public domain so that any interested developer can have an idea how everything works.
