Hello out there and well met. I am not very new to the community, although I do not play often. And I also do not really consider myself a part of it. Why? Simple.
Example 1:
Start an account and try to join a game. In most cases you will get thrown out or notice that the other players on your team just leave when you are level 4 or less. Or you CAN play, but then only as cannonfodder for players boosting their own rank with easy pickings.
Example 2:
You have finally joined a game and start playing. As soon as thing get ugly your own team"mates" start bawing at you because you are just a "n00b" and ruin the game etc. and simply disconnect, leaving you alone out there. Well hello, there MIGHT be people, who cannot afford to play this game the whole day and NOT be so top-notch as others. Of course I watch replays, read strategy guides but that alone does not help. I have no problems with losing a game, but I have problems with being cursed because of playing the game. I know my gameplay sucks in comparison to others, but I do not need comments like "You suck" or "Quit playing this game". So it might seem there happens to be an "elite" caste of players who think they own this game - and there should be no n00bs allowed.
Example 3:
You watch a replay and read the ingame-chat. L33t-speak sucks...it sucks hard. I am a grown-up im my 30s and reading this kind of trash makes my footnails curl. Especially when used to brag around or insult the opponents. And also you might see weird behavior like losing a game and stating it only happened because the opponent bored the player writing this nonsense. And even funnier admitting defeat but wanting to let the other guy concede the game. Looks like no brains and no honor to me.
Happenes not in every replay but in a fair share.
Example 4:
Enter the chat and read a bit. It won't take 2 minutes until you read something rassistic, nazi-talk (besides very strange names) or just trolling. You might get the impression that there are many idiots present constantly.

So...where are the nice guys around? Players who encourage people to play this game because it is fun. Players helping new players. People being polite. Patient people. People who talk in full sentences that do not offend anyone and make sense?
Anyway, I am repelled currently.
CoH is a great game, but playing online really is spoiled for me because of the above. Anyone feeling likewise?

These are the following solutions or answers to your problems in my own opinion:

1. As said before, go play automatch. Initially, you'll get creamed as the game has a stiff learning curve. If automatch isn't your thing, go find an actual noob server, being a game with people is barely 50-50 win-lose ratio or less. Or make your own, just make sure the people in them are real noobs (like said before, barely OK stats or crappy stats, people with 0 games might be smurfs).

2. Like it or not, there's gonna be people that will always troll. Especially as this game is really hard to play, someone is gonna compelain on you or someone else's skill. Just ignore them if they're not giving any constructive criticism. Automatch or arranged game, it really boils to this point. It's like road rage tbh. Just pay attention to your own gameplay. Don't judge others and they won't judge you. If they do judge you, ignore. Just play.

3. Most of the time, people online don't have time to write an essay sadly. So expect such slang and jargon. As long as you can read it within one or two readings, its fine [ie, get thre (get there), u cap that falg (you capture that flag)], as it only requires you to acquaint to the settings. If the dialogue is ridiculously impossible to read like 0/\/\F6, then yes it is stupid and unnecessary. On losing, people are always find an excuse to explain their shortcomings. There is a phenomenon called "smurf's honor," but that only applies among seasoned players who play with hidden newbie accounts. If you're a true newbie, relax and play the game. If you win, its yours to reap the reward if you earn it.

4.Most of the chat is full of nonsense. From nazis to armchair professionals, don't take it seriously.

Just dont pay any attention to such rude idiots. Try take such phenomena lightly and maybe laugh with them. laugh with their stupidity and go on.

If you actually try to engage in a serious debate while in the chat you will get very frustrated. Sometimes when I am waiting for automatch to connect I like to send out a statement like "Man, people who want to ban abortion sure are stupid" and then my game connects so I leave chat knowing that I just started a hornets nest of idiots who are trying to seriously disagree with me, and I am not even there anymore.

Ever since I started to ignore ppl on chat (i have 480+) i cant see those things you are talking about.
CAPS LOCK = ignore
spam = ignore
nub talk = ignore
racist = ignore

to log in takes a bit longer.

The ignore function very quickly makes the chat bearable... not that there is any real reason to be in chat, except to check your friends-list. The only thing that upsets me is having to play an automatch against someone who is rude.

If I start the match by saying "GL, HF" and get "suck my dick" or "haha GG" back right away it really burns me up... which I know is exactly what they want.

Well, I am not so naive to think, everything is nice and tidy on the internet - i happen to be in chatrooms from time to time so I have seen my share of bad stuff. My main concern is the attitude, some players show. This game was made to provide fun to an adult community (in my country you must be grown up to buy it).
But from nicknames, behavior and speech level one might think you encounter 13-14 year-old kids with same bad manners like a harbour laborer.
Some players are just arrogant and ill-mannered. I mean: this is a kind of E-Sports, isn't it? But where is the sportsmanship?
L33t-speak might be o.k. to relay short messages in-game. No fuss about that. But when you get stuff in game from your opponent and he wants to talk with you or upset you - well, I think this does not belong into a game.
It is o.k. for me to be beaten - comes with the game and hopefully I learn from my mistakes.

Urgh how I hate that term, to me it's just gaming pure and simple.

One thing I do if I'm getting abuse ingame is just tell them to stop being a nob, you'dd be surprised how often it does the trick. If that doesn't work simply ignore, or get out of the game if your not enjoying it, it's your free time, use it for your enjoyment!

It doesn't ruin the game for me but it does get annoying... Especially in game chat that's just really offensive... ie trying to put you off. They're easy to beat I find as they're obviously spending more time typing horrible bile than actually playing the game...

You come across more of this at the lower ranks - say 1-7 for some reason... you rarely see it after that... That said, I only ever play 1v1 automatch...

I am still honestly amazed at the amount of people who behave like idiots or whatever you wanna call them. Most of the time I dont care about people calling me names etc. in game, actually I tend to laugh at them. Although imagining how their lives look like make me truly a little bit sad. Yeah I'm the sensitive type biggrin.gif

A few days ago something truly epic happened, which is closely related to this topic!

1. I smurf as wehr and get matched against some smurf on WT. After ~5 minutes the guy walks into my über defensive line of 2 mg's, 2 volks and 2 pios. I think I didnt even hit FTFL yet, the next attack I did though tongue.gif Result: the guy is angry. 'LEARN TO P{LAY U %NOOBH' things like that.

Nothing special right? Well now comes the thing, the guy apparantly remakes his account, cause I get to match him again biggrin.gif
Not once, not twice, but another 3 times! 2 of them again on WT haha. I've never seen such a rage. While I was playing someone else he was whispering 10 minutes long at me! 10 minutes while I did not reply, truly epic in terms of sad people. I laughed about it.

Yes, rude players generally suck, but occasionally they are also funny.

It's much worse, though, with teammates who are actively trying to ruin your game when they don't have it their way. Like sending all their forces back to base and then go afk.
