Infinity Ward could almost foretell that someone would eventually hack Modern Warfare 2, with the lack of dedicated servers support, lack of console and even mods. So naturally someone has. They have managed to enable console and, by extension, the ability to join dedicated servers which were enabled by another modder. This then allows people to host and join dedicated servers, which is what the PC community has been begging for since the games release. The following video is an example of someone playing on a dedicated server which is running a mod, hence the low gravity and unlimited ammunition.
It was completely obvious that this would eventually happen to Modern Warfare 2 from the day that they announced no dedicated servers, which aggravated the whole PC community. While no one has been banned by Valve's Anti-Cheat (VAC) program yet, it is important to note that VAC often hands out bans weeks after it discovers a hack.
1. That video is epic, seriously, wants me to buy a copy then hack it. 2. I wouldn't ever actually hack it. The chances of IW reacting badly are too high. 3. Here is my dream outcome of this though, is that IW take the same stance they did with those that people that played early, i.e. that if they paid for it they can do what they like. Hell, maybe IW might say "Alright, you can have dedis", but I doubt it...
It puzzles me as to why they don't make dedicated servers. There are so many people that are not buying the game because of that sole purpose. If they gave us dedicated servers it would benefit us and them as well.
If it wasnt for the fact that this was on Steam i'd probably buy it and try it out. However, the risk of getting VAC banned and losing all games on my Steam account is just too high.
Well hopefully this enlightens IW to put in dedicated servers, we could see these few as the Robin Hood's. Yeah, I wouldn't try it out considering that it is too risky, and I don't want to lose all the game's ive bought
You don't lose all your games when Valve bans you. VAC will prevent you from playing on VAC protected servers, that's 'all' from what I saw (had the pleasure to play vs 'banned' players twice). As for MW2, without servers there should be also no VAC or am I wrong?

That's not much consolation if you can't play your legitimate games on the vast majority of servers.
I'm guessing there will be a large uptake of mw2 sales on brand new steam accounts as soon as a steam weekend sale comes for it.
That server looks incredibly fun. Agreed with Oracle, I'd buy MW2 if they had servers like this. What is the harm they are doing with this btw? If they do no harm to anyone/thing, then I see no reason to start hunting these people down.
What exactly is so expensive about having dedicated server support for the game company anyway? Isn't it just a customer hosting a server on their own dollar?

Because dedicated servers can run custom maps, and that means that IW can't sell map packs to PC games.

every other cod title allows you to adjust the gravity settings, most fps games allow an admin to perform with function.
I see. So all they did is change a few settings here and there? Sure, hacking is not allowed, but you know that everything is getting hacked these days (hell, type in 'Windows 7' and watch the suggestions it gives). I see no harm done, they can continue this imo.
The option for either/or would certainly be a nice middle-ground imo. Though I'm sure that it would probably cost more. Just have a matchmaking system for quick and casual games, and dedicated hosting for serious play.
