Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance News - Supreme Commander 2 Hands-On

Gas Powered Games has not let out much about their upcoming title Supreme Commander 2. However, recently a short demo was available for developers to play at Gamescom. IGN's Steve Butt thought that Supreme Commander 2 was still very similar to the original title, but also quite different at the same time.

"Many things from the original are still there. You still control a gigantic robot to build your initial base. You can still queue up build orders when setting down mass extractors, generators, and land factories to fuel production of and build units." Steve said. "It's still possible to zoom way out until you can see the entire map, though in this case the map was rather small, resembling more of a Demigod map than something out of the original game. When you're zoomed out, units are still labeled with little symbols that help distinguish what is what, an important factor when a whole bunch of units are bunched together."

He also added that Supreme Commander 2 will offer a much better console experience, with an all new camera system and control layout compared to the last ones which didn't quite work in Supreme Commander.

The way the player defends his base has also changed: instead of the original style of building numerous different structures to support and defend the base, the player can now build shields and guns directly on his factories in addition to being able to set up the regular point and air defenses.

"The new system was an attempt to make the first and second tier techs and early units more meaningful towards the end of the game." Chris Taylor from Gas Powered Games said. "Rather than simply racing for this highest units in the tech tree and using those, the incremental boosts to your lower level units will give them a chance to stay competitive on the battlefield."

Also, GameTrailers.com recently posted a short video preview from Gamescom, check it out below:

Unfortunately, there was no news concerning release dates, other in-game features, or multiplayer. But be sure to keep checking back in, as more news is expected to be released soon.

View the original article here

Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance News - SupCom 2 Gameplay Presentation and E3 Previews

After the magazine coverage and a cinematic trailer Chris Taylor has now shown an early playable version Supreme Commander 2 at E3 2009 in a presentation lasting 12 minutes.

You can find this video on Gamespot but IGN has a six minute video where in the beginning the unit cannon is more clearly on display (you definitely want to see how units pop out of those unit cannon shots).

Online E3 previews of SupCom 2 containing more details are also found on IGN and on Gamespot.

The game is just nine months into development so bear in mind it's all a work in progress (even though GPG targets a release of (early) 2010). Some of the big changes are explained, like the upgrade system, the more intricate maps but many questions still remain about how much exactly the economy has been trimmed down for example.

Here is a list of some major stuff that's been revealed now, keep in mind some of this might change before release:

- Three factions: UEF, Cybran and the Illuminate (which are a splinter faction of the Aeon in the previous games).
- Economy system is revamped, no more stalling it seems, you can only start producing a unit when you enough resources for it.
- Faster unit build times overall.
- Weapon shots are still calculated by a physics simulation so they can miss ą la TA/SupCom.
- Strategic Zoom is being remade to make it feel more natural, still a work-in-progress which is why it hasn't been shown yet.
- Same visual quality as Demigod, much more detailed maps (with huge depths in which airplanes can crash) and a more distinct art style for each faction
- There are still going to be huge maps and hundreds of units running around on them
- New upgrade system, five different paths/tech tree subsets namely Land, Air, Naval, Structures and Commander. It's meant to make early units more viable later on.
- Upgrades are also shown visually on the units themselves (like extra or longer cannon barrels, small anti-air turrets on tanks such) and are funded by resources.
- Experience can be used somehow for upgrades/improved veterancy as well, giving attacking players just as much tools as turtle players.
- SupCom 2 will have almost 25 experimentals, divided into mini-experimentals and major experimentals.
- Revealed experimentals: UEF Fatboy II, UEF Unit Cannon (major), UEF AC1-1000 Gunship (mini), Cybran Zilla (major), Cybran Megalith, Illuminate Ear Canal (mini), Illuminate Universal Colossus, ...
- There should be between 25-30 multiplayer/skirmish maps available at launch.
- Naval combat is still present, it's just not shown on E3.
- ACU can be upgraded with jumpjets, escape pod, torpedoes, core dump option, artillery, etcetera.
- GPG has implemented a new rendering engine and illumination model for this game
- New pathfinding engine sounds like it's gonna be revolutionary, and lower the system requirements considerably, SupCom 2 should be playable on PCs of three years old and make better use of multicore CPUs.
- AI will make use of a "neural net", an evolving database which lets AI adjust to the player's actions on the go.

Small update: the official site of SupCom 2 has just been launched as well. You can find screenshots of the map shown in the video presentation there while the cool trailer music plays on the background.

2nd small update: a new interview with Chris Taylor from Button Masher reveals more goodies.

Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance News - First SupCom 2 details revealed

PC Gamer UK has a scoop on Supreme Commander 2 with comments from Chris Taylor who describes this sequel as being less about economy management and more about interesting combat and more worthwhile units.

The preview in question has been scanned already and it carries a first screenshot as well, showing lots of action in a city tileset.

A few notable quotes from the Gas Powered Games CEO, remember these have already been pulled out-of-context for the preview and the game is still relatively early in development:

QUOTE

"If I start the game and in the first 60 seconds I build a tank, I want that tank to deliver the killing blow to my opponent 35 minutes to 90 minutes later."

"Every one of them [units] has the ability to sustain themselves throughout the entire game, so we need each of them to be much more complex and have many facets."

"Take the economy management off the table... You'll be able to play this like any other RTS."

"The nerd in me died a little bit," Chris confesses [about trimming economy], but said, "That's OK Chris, because more people are going to have fun with the combat aspect of the game and not get bogged down in the economic management."

"We're going away from iconographic units to a living, breathing RTS game - Square Enix has this unbelievable skill[? blurry on scan] for creating stories and characters and they're experts at this."

The article further mentions that SupCom 2 will still have hundreds of units on screen and that the game's visuals have been improved even though it should be playable on a £500 PC. The game will be out in 2010. It already looks to be very different from the first game but that isn't always a bad thing of course and the whole article still sounds very vague.

Be sure to pick up PC Gamer UK (with the... ehm, StarCraft II cover) so you can read it without the blurriness. It will be available in stores on Thursday 7th May. The scan was made by a loyal subscriber.

Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance News - Clanleague Season III is finished!

Yesterday the last playday of the Clanleague was held.

Voices of War had already won the Clanleague 1 week ago, when they won vs AAL and had such a high score, that noone could catch up to them.

So yesterday there was still the interesting match between Legion of Annihilation and Alien Assembly Line, who both fought for the 2nd rank. Lo4 did win this matchup and is now 2nd of the Season.

This season was quite a big success.
After having some starting problems, soon the sunday evening was a Clanleague playday for a lot of people. Also in February Zulan, Zock and Gowerly started to cast the most interesting matchups of each playday (url is http://live.myvowclan.de), with Gowerly even in English. There were roundabout 90-120 viewers each playday! And we saw a lot of interesting matchs and games in this time.

Also, this time no single clan had to forfeit and leave the league, what we had in former seasons. Even the underdogs played till the end! I really have to thank them too!

I also thank all people helping to organize the league, starting with all players of each clan. You did a good job, and I hope to see you in the next Season, and that you tell others to participate too, so we may get 2 divisions again!
Thanks to all clanleaders and/or teamleaders who did the team management. This is much work, and everyone should recognize that.

A really big appreciation goes to the Casting team. Clanleague would be much less fun and much less a community project, if it wasnt for the cast!

And especially I thank Grumbll and nebu for doing the League with me
Nebu also made a clanleague information page, as some people dont like forums, and cannot navigate good in them. So all important information is on this page, and will be in the future.
www.clanleague.tk

The Clan League is a great opportunity for Supcom:FA clans to fight it out and prove their abilities.

Be sure to check the Rules thread beforehand, and make sure you are ready.

For this season we again have some changes.

1on1 now are only best of one, and give 2 points for the winner.
2on2 are now more important because they give 3 points for the winning team.

We have also decided to have fewer custom maps.
Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance News - Supreme Commander 2 Announced

Square Enix, which produced the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series, has announced that it will be working to publish Supreme Commander 2. Gas Powered Games is known for its Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander games, along with the in-development Demigod, and will continue to be the developer for the Supreme Commander series. No information about gameplay or the release schedule has been announced as of yet. Chris Taylor, the designer of Supreme Commander, has previously said that current hardware is too limited for his vision of Supcom 2, although it is difficult to determine how this will affect the sequel.

"LOS ANGELES (November 12, 2008) &mdash Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in North America (Square Enix), and development house Gas Powered Games Corp., (Gas Powered Games) announced today that they have formed a strategic partnership. With the commencement of this strategic partnership, development has begun on SUPREME COMMANDER® 2, a sequel to the award-winning real-time strategy series.

This strategic partnership represents one of the first steps Square Enix Co., Ltd., a sister company of Square Enix headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, and its affiliates (collectively, Square Enix Group) are taking towards their goal of increasing western development efforts aimed for the global markets. Square Enix Group has previously worked exclusively with Japanese development companies, so the decision to form strategic partnerships with developers located outside of Japan serves as a new cornerstone of its strategy to create games targeted primarily at consumers in North America and Europe. Additionally, Square Enix Group's foray into the real-time strategy genre is a significant expansion of its product lineup, largely known for its leadership role in the genre of role-playing games.

"We see great opportunities in North American and European markets, both of which are expected to be maintaining sustainable growth over these coming years," said Yoichi Wada, president and representative director of Square Enix Co., Ltd.. "Therefore, it is crucial we create alliances with proven developers such as Gas Powered Games in order to serve these significant markets better by providing products and services in tune with customer tastes."

"Gas Powered Games is an accomplished development house that has demonstrated its ability to successfully create and develop intellectual properties," said John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix and Square Enix Ltd., Square Enix's sister company in U.K. "We are extremely excited to begin working with Gas Powered Games' talented personnel and see this strategic partnership as a significant step in our efforts to bring Square Enix titles to a broader global audience."

Creator of hit titles such as Dungeon Siege®, and Supreme Commander, Gas Powered Games® was founded in 1998 by one of the game industry's most imaginative and dynamic visionaries Chris Taylor, who serves as chief executive officer. "It is truly a great honor to join forces with as renowned a developer and publisher as Square Enix," said Taylor: "Everyone at Gas Powered Games is thrilled about this collaboration, and the results will surely delight video game fans around the world."

Details on SUPREME COMMANDER 2 including gameplay features, platform(s) and ship date will be available at a later time."

The announcement at the Square Enix website.

Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance News - Clan League Season 2 Results

The 2nd Season of Gamereplays.org's ClanLeague Intergalactic Colosseum is finished!

After 6 exciting playdays, we have to announce that this season was a total success.

The results are as follows:

1st: VoW: 70
2nd: Lo4: 44
3rd: BPT: 37
4th: WFW: 26

You can view all playday results here.

In this season we had a lot of fun! One reason for that was that all clans had a really good playerbase! In the 1st season a lot of the games had to be postponed or cancelled due to a lack of players, but this time, only one game out of 60 had to be cancelled. Although we increased the minimum number of players per clan, all of the participating clans had enough players online. We also rarely had waiting times. Everyone was on time, so no delays occured.

We will be hosting a new season, so stay tuned! We expect it to start in 3-4 weeks.
We also got some feedback from the team leaders, and maybe one or the other will lend us a helping hand, so we will have more manpower for the league.

We are also discussing new rules and will try to attract more clans, so we may have 6-8 clans for the next season.

Thanks to everyone and congrats to VoW!
