Is the idea of zerg vs zerg to 1 base start with lings and follow up with roaches?

The 3 things you need at the beginning of a ZvZ are: zergling speed, baneling nest, natural hatchery.

You can get these in almost w.e order, but obviously if your expansion is later than your opponents you're gonna be behind, so you should try to do damage.

In general though I advise trying to play greedy and defending rather than attacking, so go hatch first into speedlings into banelings with 2 spines, and make a lot of drones

then later yes, roaches.

I get used to build some roaches with mass lings in early zvz. It's less micro oriented than lings\banelings action, but you unable to push your opponent early

Problem with roaches is you can lose to ling all-ins. But if you go banelings you can defend roach all-ins with lings+spines.

If you are in gold try to have a good early defense and set yourself up for a strong economy midgame. Do not 1 base unless you need to defend from an early pool.

If both of you are playing passive just focus on trying to max out on roach + hydra/infester with upgrades.
