One of iamgrunt's (one of the best AoE3 players) clever strategies is to time his shipments for the perfect chance at winning the game. He waits and splits his opponents units up while they're attacking his base and then out comes the 5 Lancer card destroying his opponent's cannons while their anti-cavalry is somewhere else inside his base. Applying this to your own gameplay can help you survive all forms of attacks and is something incredibly useful. A great way to do this is if your enemy is holding his army back while his Falconets are destroying your buildings, you can run some units towards them then run them away and a lot of the time his units protecting the artillery will follow leaving you a clear space to kill his expensive cannons.
