Most people already know how to change their names, but it seems as if many people don't know how to use long names, which have more than 20 characters, for instance. It's impossible to do that with Generals alone - but don't worry, you don't need any extra Programs. You got everything you need. I have censored my Email addresses and my Postal Code, so don't ask yourself why there are red dots somewhere.

Introduction
Well, what do you actually need? You need an installed version of Generals and an Internet browser. You also need notepad, but it comes with Windows, so I guess that you didn't delete it (if that's even possible). You might have seen some people with names that are extremely long - but you couldn't create them yourselves. They used two simple tricks and I'll explain them here. Here's an example:
GameSpy
Open the website www.gamespyid.com or click here. Now to be honest, I don't remember exactly if I have ever signed up on their website. I don't think so, but it's been some years ago, so I'm not sure. You should focus on the left side.
Make sure that you have clicked on the radiobox next to "GameSpy".
Fill in your Generals Email address and password. Don't worry, it's a secure connection and they have your PW and your Email address anyway, as Generals runs over GameSpy servers.
Click on "Log In"
You will see an overview of all of your accounts. That is also helpful if you can't remember the name of one of your accounts - here they are! Now click on the name of the account you want to modify. You will now get the message that you are logged in. Click on "Update Profile".
GameSpy now asks for changes. You have to fill in all informations on the left side and also type in your password at the top - three times altogether.
Change your Nickname to the name you want to choose. It does not matter how long the name is, however, you should reduce it to about 20 characters. Extremely long names can be very annoying.
Your Email address and your password should match the Email address and password you have typed in earlier! You might get an errormessage if you don't do so.
Your name is not important, it could also be "Mister" as your first name and "X" as your last name.
Click on "Save and finish". Do not close GameSpyid.com yet!
Modifying the GameSpy file
Go to "C:\My Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data", it's your Generals online folder where your Screenshots and other online things are stored - also your Account informations. You can't edit your own stats anymore, you come too late now.
Right click on your "GameSpyLogin" file and choose "Open with.." and select "Notepad".
You now can see all of your Email addresses and the accounts which are connected with these Email addresses.
Remember the Email address you have used for gamespyid.com to edit one of your accounts? You will see your old account name in the list somewhere. Now here is what you do: Copy your new account name from Gamespyid.com and put it infront of all your other names. If your list looked like this:
"MyNewNameIsUltraLongBecauseILoveIt" is your new account name. You will see very shortly why that's so handy.
Click on Ctrl and S to save these changes.
Now open Generals, go to "Multiplayer" and you will see that your Account field is empty. "What is that?", you might ask. Click on the dropdown menu and you will see your new account name on the top of the list. You can click on it and log in now.
Advantages and Myths
Like I already mentioned, you can change clantags, create extremely long names, but also use some illegal characters. You now can choose the names you like - and not the names Generals likes.
"I have changed my name via gamespyid.com and lost my account / my stats"
Pure nonsense. I have changed my names about 50 times and not even lost a single disconnect. You don't lose your account or your stats, neither do you lose medals or buddies.
Sidenote
I don't want to write a new guide for it, as it's a small thing. If you are sick of words getting censored, e.g if you want to write Salami (I'll never understand why that is banned), there are two tricks. You can use a big "i" instead of an "L" for Salami, so that you are writing "saiami". If you have words without any "L", you will get into problems here. What to do? Write a word like "hello", don't press the space button and press "alt" and then press "0", then "2" and then "5" and "5" (alt 0255) on your right keyboard. Now write a word like "Salami" and press Enter. It will now work. You can also write "Salami", press alt 0255 and then write a new word.

For the banned words thing, just go into the actual Generals folder (in C:/Program Files) and delete lang.dat (I think it is ) Then nothing is replaced with stars
omg ur gamespy dif 2 mine...i tried update it but it wudnt let me
mine ust 2 work doesnt now....and yes cypher i have lost several accounts 2 the wonderous depths of gamespy naminator where u need a unique uid yet everything under 20 characters has been used by some dipshit on bfme2 or cod or some other shit game.
I guess that you are using the Gamespy program? You don't need that. Just go to gamespyid.com and do it there. I've renamed my accounts so often and never lost an account.
I was mucking around with changing names.. and i just went to my CCG folder --> gamespyid and change done of my current online names to my desired names, saved the document, and Voila, it worked.. Is it that easy for anyone else? cos it sure worked for me.
