Today, Electronic Arts announced their takeover of Atlanta-based Super Computer International, and will integrate the company and its PlayLinc technology into EA’s Online Technology Group.
SCI is the creator of PlayLinc, an online game browsing and messaging platform launched last year by AOL and Verizon. It includes social networking tools like IM and VoIP, buddy tracking, player invitations, team management and more.
“SCI’s development expertise is uniquely suited to our online technology needs,” said Nanea Reeves, EA vice president and Online COO. “The team’s technical leadership and creative approach is a great fit, and we’re thrilled to have them join EA.”
Most GameReplays members know that many of EA's online games use GameSpy's servers. From simple arcade games to serious cybersports projects like Command and Conquer 3, Battlefield series and Crysis etc. But the big problems with GameSpy services are, that they're generally unreliable (often experiencing downtime), and lack key features for competitive online gaming such as arranged team quickmatch and proper clan support. These factors have made Gamespy very unpopular with gamers.
We will see how this acquisition will affect EA`s online future.
