The Tournament Site

The Tournament Site is where GameReplays RotWK Tournaments will be hosted.

To register in upcoming tournaments, do the following:
  • Register on the site.
  • Click on the upcoming tourney's name.
  • Click on 'Sign Up for this Tournament'.
  • Post your tourney site nickname in the upcoming tournament's announcement thread if you have not signed up for a tournament in the past.

If the upcoming tourney is a team tourney, you have two options:
  • Create your own team.
    or
  • Sign up as a pug player (alone) in which case you will be paired with an available pug player once the tourney starts.

The Tournament
  • Arrive in the lobby given to you by the host (assume the 5+ Players Lobby unless otherwise stated) at least five minutes before the tournament is scheduled to begin. No late arrivals will be tolerated. You will be removed from the tournament and excluded from the next tournament should this happen twice.
  • Follow the directions of the tournament host. Tell the host the results of each game after it is finished.
  • Make sure you save a replay of every game played. A winner of each match should post the replay in the appropriate Replays and Results thread immediately after the game is played.

Tournament Types

Boiloff - Boiloff tournaments give the tournament host total control over how the event is run, allowing tournaments with many special rules, including free-for-all tournaments, tournaments of different game types (1v1, 2v2, etc.), and tournaments where players may switch teams, just to name a few. Individual rules will be provided for each boiloff tournament, as each one will be different from the last!

Single Elimination - This is the basic tournament. You play against the opponent matched against you. If you lose you're out; if you win you continue to the next round where you face the winner of the match parallel to your own on the brackets. This is basically a Last Man Standing tournament - the person who never loses wins the tourney.

Consolation - Consolation is the same as Single Elimination, but with a Consolation Bracket. Players who lose in the first round are entered into the consolation bracket, which is a totally separate Single Elimination bracket with its own separate consolation winner. Players eliminated from the regular bracket in subsequent rounds are not entered into the consolation bracket, and the winner of the regular bracket is the winner of the entire tournament.

Double Elimination - In a Double Elimination tournament, players start out in the winner's bracket. When a player loses his first game he is moved into the loser's bracket. Even if a player loses in the finals of the winner's bracket, he can still claim victory in the loser's bracket. The winners of both brackets then go head-to-head to see who really wins the tournament. If the winners-bracket player wins, he wins, and it's over. If he loses, he moves to the losers bracket, and both players have to play again to determine the winner. The tournaments are more fun - and more fair - but take longer than Single Elimination tournaments.

Round Robin - This is how you truly determine the best player. In Round Robin you play against every player a certain amount of times (often more than once) - 3, 5, etc. (generally on a different map every time) and you receive 1 point per win. Naturally the player who has the most points in the end is likely to be the best as he lost the least amount of games while facing different strategies and armies.

Rules

Absence

If you are absent from a tournament that you registered in you will be given one warning. If it happens again you will not be allowed to register in the following tournament. Should it happen a third time, chances are good you won't be playing in another tournament. If you registered for tournament and are late (more than 5 minutes), it will be counted as an absence.

There are few valid excuses: you register - you show up, simple as that. You may unregister at any time before the tournament is locked (usually shortly before it is time to begin) if you have last minute plans, but if you do not then you must participate. There's no reason other players should be kept waiting if you can't abide by times you've agreed to. Unregistering is very simple to do, so failure to unregister is taken very seriously.

If you register for a tournament you must be prepared to be playing for at least 3 hours, unless another time is given for a specific tournament. If you do not think you will be able to stay in that long - don't enter. Someone who leaves in the middle of a tournament will suffer the same consequences as someone absent or late for a game.

Disconnection

If you or your partner disconnect it will count as an automatic loss, make sure that you take a screen shot of the other person disconnecting for proof. If it happens multiple times you may not be allowed to participate in following tournaments.

Cheats & Bug Abuse

We have zero tolerance as far as cheats & bug abusing are concerned. If you are caught engaging in either, you will be banned from all future tournaments as well as receive a 2 week suspension from GR.org. If you do it again you will receive a permanent ban from GR.org.

All that being said, we hope to see you participating in as many future tournaments as you can. These tournaments are about competition but primarily, they're about having fun - so keep things fair and enjoy yourselves. Good luck to all future tournament participants!

Double-Elimination in Detail

Double-elimination tournaments can be confusing for many people if they don't understand what's going on properly. If you want to be certain you know exactly what's going on, you'll read this post and study the bracket below.

In a double-elimination tournament, you start out in the winner's bracket. When you lose your first game you go into the loser's bracket. Even if you lose in the finals of the winner's bracket, you can still claim victory in the loser's bracket. The winners of both brackets then go head-to-head to see who really wins the tournament. If the winners-bracket player wins, he wins, it's over. If he loses, he moves to the losers bracket, and both players have to play again to determine the winner.

All in all, it's a much more fair (and fun!) tournament than single-elimination, but it takes much more time, as well. You'll likely end up waiting ten or twenty minutes during this time for another game to finish, so bring along a good book. In addition, there's no guarantee the tournament will be over in three hours - the final rounds might be played past that, or even delayed to another time, so be prepared to stay longer if you really want to win.

Here's an example of a double-elimination bracket from a previous tourney.

Note that -emoTion would have had to beat Duali†y twice to win that tournament.
