I was talking to someone at Blizzcon who was considering making a map with a low, direct path, that is covered with lava at regular intervals, and indirect paths around it above the lava. This could be used to allow fast units to escape, and slower unit following them would die if their controller is not paying attention.
alot of map makers are all thinking about this concept and how it can change gameplay... map makers did just about everything possible in SC to alter gameplay, such as stacking destructible temples on each other to open up a new route, block routes with minerals, etc....
Did someone say: AVALANCHE. They could implant lava and then there would be a timer that you can see above your minimap. They could make zerg bury below the lava and let protoss use force-fields (nullifier) to block lava from flooding. Collosi using their long legs to wade trough the lava in pursue of some (almost) dead zerglings. hellions burning their way trough the think snow. Bunkers hidden beneath the lava to surprise some stupid protoss. Hmmm, the possibillities.
