Tournament XX After Action Report

The dust has settled, diligent pioneers have harvested the munitions from the hundreds of wrecks that litter the front, and yet another GameReplays Company of Heroes tournament has awed and astounded. While there were no major deviations from the standard strategies, Tournament XX was nevertheless a heart-stopping clash of men and metal.

Day One

Round One of the tournament was played on Pointe Du Hoc, a unique map with a pleasant sea-side setting that many players detest. 64 teams battled it out for those all-important medium fuel and munitions points at the southern tip of the beach-head; veteran teams consistently pushed the brave unseeded players back into the water. However, Soldiers of Fortune (BFPlayer and uncleTerminator) gave everyone a surprise by defeating Seph and Crazy1 of team Win in the first round. Seeded 7th and with a name like team Win, it was quite the upset.

Duclair was the scene of the next set of skirmishes, with armies charging across bridges and through trees to meet on farmer's fields with guns blazing. Duclair is a map on which things can go from bad to terrible quite quickly once an army's grip on the map starts slipping, and there were a preponderance of 2-0 matches as a result. Seeded teams began to meet one another in Round Two, including the highly favored LastMohicans, falling after three games to For fans only.

The third round was on Wolfheze, a cramped rail-way station where British mortar pits and Wehrmacht Stukas tend to rule the day. The close quarters lends itself to non-stop action and lots of brutal battles, and spectators of the various live GameReplays broadcasts of the tournaments were treated to a number of exciting games in Round Three. Team A Squared had an excellent game three against the Russian power-house Today is Not Your Day in which resident Strategy Specialist Audemed showed us that elite infantry are not just for laughs: his two squads of Airborne took out well over 200 tons of Axis armor. Check out the replay below!

Day Two

The remaining eight teams had all fought long and hard to get to the 4th Round, but war is hell, and there was no rest to be found for these commanders as the battle reconvened on yet another rail-way, Rails & Metal. Of the remaining teams in Day Two, there was only a single loss to be found among all of their previous matches. The only dropped game was from rebimboca da parafuseta, who did so against the #1 team on the AT leaderboard, Keep Their Heads Ringing. Despite the high skill level of all the remaining teams, all the undefeated teams that made it through Round 4 remained without losses. Even with all the sweeps, there were still interesting matches to be had, in particular game one of InsaneStars versus We're Bringing Sexy Back:

The semi-finals held three teams drawn from clan Insane, who weren't likely pleased to have to meet one another. Epsilon went head-to-head against 2Boys1Cup and team InsaneStars looked to give rebimboca da parafuseta a couple more losses. Both semi-finals series went all three games, but in the end Epsilon and InsaneStars came out victorious.

If there was any doubt about the ridiculous amount of skill in Team Insane, all four players in the Tournament XX final being from Insane should keep those nay-sayers quiet for awhile. Despite being clan-mates, the finals were no-holds-barred with both teams fighting desperately for that first-place prize. The most recent Sunday Night Fights episode has both the Finals and semi-finals for your viewing pleasure.

A brief re-cap of the finals for the curious:
Spoiler

As they had been doing all tournament, Seb and Contador of team Epsilon played an absolutely fearsome double Wehrmacht game, forcing the British truck off of the medium fuel very early and securing a lead that InsaneStars just couldn't make up. Freed0m and IlikethewayUmove are no slouches, however, and they went into game 2 looking for revenge. However, the pressure applied to the Brit Headquarters was not full-on, and while Seb defended Contador was all over the other side of the map doing damage and capping territory. Some well-placed and perhaps slightly lucky artillery sealed the deal, and Epsilon took home the XX trophy in no time flat, making it the second 2v2 tournament win for Seb and Contador.

Credits

First and foremost, all the Tournament XX competitors gave each game their all and contributed to the collection of great games on this website. The valiant referees made sure that everything went as smooth as possible, and those players who broadcasted did everyone a favor by showing just how they do what they do. The Sunday Night Fights crew brought us yet another excellent show, and the community supported it by showing up and watching! Thanks also to all the staff that helped to make this tournament possible.
