No, last week it did not say "later this month". I know when I looked last week it said something like "very soon". The page has definitely been updated recently.
Specific stages? Do not like the sound of this. Sounds like people with preorders are gonna get the shaft, smells fishy.
Smells like preorders will get to beta test half of the first level or some crap like that while the privileged few get to beta test the bulk of the game.
I just know that first stage is for family and friends of THQ and Relic, then I guess they will open the beta to more people to stress test servers. The beta keys I got during Eurogamer are for an early closed beta.
Yeah as far as I've understood it, lucky few with beta keys from expos and so on are involved in closed beta. Pre-order is for open beta. It makes sense to have a dedicated bunch of people involved in closed beta refinements that the developers can handle and cater for, to then have the main horde bash at those refinements in the open beta. It's a nice way to iterate and refine the game IMHO.

You are correct; indeed, it would not make a lot of sense. I can only guess there will be 3 or more iterations of the beta, and some will be more 'open' than others.
^^ Agree. It will probably be done in stages. The coh2 page in the THQ store states that if you pre-purchase you will get access to the "closed beta". There will probably be time before that access is granted where a few peeps will be allowed to playtest the game.
