Tournament XXI After Action Report

Day One: Thanks for Coming!

Round one was played on Sturzdorf, which has been significantly improved in the latest patch. Out of the 64 games that were played, 26 games were no shows and all but 3 of the other games ended in a 2-0 white wash to the higher seeded players. It did look dicey at one stage for Semint, who looked to be struggling with a 113 seed player by the name of Sinadra (who apparently forgot to add the number 1 in front of the 6 he put down for his level). Semint went down in the first game playing as US against PE. Semint then showed his class, rallying to win the next 2 games in a row and advancing to the next round!

Round 2 was played on Duclair, with no surprise results. Most of the games finished in a 2-0 clean sweep, but c0mpl3x1ty and Game clashed in a hard fought 3 games. c0mpl3x1ty came out hard and fast in the first game as US and surprised Game with some good old fashioned US play. Game held his nerve, however, and was able to get himself back into the fight and win the next two games.

Round 3 was a best of three on Langres. There were some truly great games in this round, but the surprise of this round has to go No 51 seed Korean (SoLMisery) beating No 14 seed Sandland. The best match of the round belonged to Audemed Vs Marinez. Marinez played US in the first game against Audemed's Panzer Elite. It was a fairly even game until Marinez called in an epic Off Map Combat Group consisting of two M10's and two rifle squads which turned the tide of the game irrevocably in his favour. Unfortunately for Audemed, his Panther Battle Group just came too late to turn the game around. To Audemed's credit, he held his nerve and in the next game he was ice cool playing as US; Audemed dominated the early game and pressed home his advantage to get the win. With Audemed choosing US as his faction for the final game, he set out to repeat exactly what he did in the previous game. He succeeded, and advanced through to round four.

Day Two: Straight for the Throat

Round 4 kicked off with 16 players battling it out for a place in the next round. The map was Angoville, which is often considered a Panzer Elite players paradise when played correctly. There were a couple of surprises this round including Korean (SoLMisery) continuing his dream run, beating No 3 seed SiberianPlatoon, and Wu299 put No 1 seed Contador through the "How to beat US as PE School" scoring an upset 2-1 victory. Wu299 dominated the first game as the Panzer Elite, but Contador showed his class in the second game playing as Wehrmacht and scored a well earned victory. Contador won the VP's in the first two games and had the choice of his faction for the deciding game. To everyone's amazement he chose to play as US! Wu299 was quick to decide to play as the Panzer Elite and repeat his first game dominance, which he did, running away with it to win the last game in great style.

Round 5 started out with 8 players going toe to toe for a place in the semi finals. This round was on Semois, which a lot of players think is currently the most balanced map in the 1v1 Automatch rotation. There were no huge upsets, just some excellent high quality play from all the players. Unfortunately for Korean his dream run was ended by FreeStyler, who progressed through to the elimination final against Seph. Wu299 also continued to knock out decent opponents with a 2-1 victory over M3allem.

Semi-Finals

The Semi finals were best of 5, with the first 2 games played on Angoville, the next 2 games on Semois and the last game, if required, was to be played on Langres. The round kicked off with Wu299 Vs RUCKAcikot. Wu299 showed everyone that making it this far in the tournament was no fluke as he dispatched his opponent without much of a problem and was rewarded with a place in the grand final. The other semifinal was between Freestyler and Seph. Seph pwned Freestyler in the first game when Freestyler made some bad mistakes early as the Panzer Elite. Freestyler came back ferociously in the next game with a quick M8 and base raid on Seph. Seph seemed unprepared for the M8 and genuinely surprised as he had not even started to build a pak38 when the M8 arrived in his base. Freestyler did the damage calling in another M8 and a couple of well placed artillery strikes. Game 3 moved onto Semois and unfortunately for Seph he was just starting to get into the game when his internet connection looked to drop. Freestyler had no hesitation in taking the win by default. Seph looked to be tired in the last game making a few strange decisions and uncharacteristic poor micro mistakes. Freestyler won without much of a problem and progressed through to the final against Wu299.

Unfortunately Freestyler had other commitments which prevented him from participating in the grand final, which automatically made Wu299 the winner of Tourney XXI 2011. A special thanks to all the players that participated and provided everyone with some action packed games. Wu299 played a brilliant Tourney XXI campaign and deserved to win after defeating Contador, M3allem and RUCKAcikot, who are all high quality opponents to say the least.
