CoH Myths Revealed #2

By Basilone™ - 13th August 2012 - 18:01 PM

This tip is provided by Kolaris

The Myth: Camouflaged units retreat slower

Myth Details: The myth holds that by retreating a unit directly from camo, it maintains its camouflaged speed reduction. The unit won't run back to base as quickly as if it retreated while uncloaked.

Speculation: In CoH, infantry speeds are handled additively. Units with Camo abilities like Snipers or Stormtroopers have a -1 speed modifier while toggled on. Retreating units have a +2 speed modifier. Retreating is not a set speed, only a modifier. If the -1 speed from camo persists during the retreat, it would interract with the retreat +2 speed like you'd expect: +2 -1 = +1.

The Tests: A foot race. No need to get technical; put a cloaked unit next to an uncloaked unit and retreat them both simultaneously. Over a long enough distance, if their speeds are different we should see the uncloaked unit pull ahead.

Verdict: CONFIRMED

Retreating a camouflaged Sniper or Stormtrooper squad will slow its pace back to the HQ. Toggling off camo first will significantly speed up how fast your fragile camo units can get out of trouble.

This applies only to active, toggled camo skills - Snipers and Stormtroopers. It does not apply to passive camo Fallschirmjaegers, or to PIAT Sappers that were cloaked in Ambush mode.
