CoH Myths Revealed #1

By Kolaris - 7th July 2011 - 22:58 PM

Welcome to CoH Myths Revealed, the weekly feature (we hope) where we shed some light on all the suspicious info you're likely to hear from a rank 7 in the GR chat channel. In this episode, we look at a myth that's been around for years, but tucked far away from common knowledge: gaining Command Points! How fast do you rack 'em up, and what influences that rate? In this guide we'll make sure you're doing all you can to get the most out of your little green numbers.

Do not try anything you are about to see at home. We're what you like to call "guys who know too much about CoH". Try this yourself and you're sure to waste time you should be playing the game! We test the myths so you don't have to.

The Myth: Floating CP slows how quickly you earn it

Source of the Myth: The link has been removed because it was broken and re-directed to an unauthorised web-site

Myth Details: Your first 2 Command Points require less CP XP (Green Numbers) than subsequent Command Points. That much is true. The trick of the myth is that it isn't just your first 2 Command Points overall that accumulate faster, but every time you go from 0 to 1 CP or 1 to 2 CP on your CP meter. So if you spend all your CP and return to 0, you're now gaining CP at the faster rate. Subsequently, if you're hoarding CP, you're losing out on CP overall and gaining at a slower rate.

Initial Conjecture: First reaction is mixed. My in-game experience tells me it could be plausible. It often feels like filling out the LHS Terror, Blitz, or Armour branches takes a lot longer than you'd expect, going by the rate you fill out the Airborne or Defensive Trees.

But from a technical standpoint, I don't think it will hold up. It seems more likely that the game tracks your overall CP, and doesn't reset itself when you spend.

This image is the source of the CP XP rates. What's important to note here is that you're soft-capped at 17 CP. However, in-game, you'll only get to 17 if you don't spend any CPs unlocking Doctrinal abilities. Usually the cap is 17 minus whatever you've spent, like if an Infantry player decides not to unlock OMCG. You'll grind to a halt at 9 CP, which is 17 - 8, eight being what you've spent in your Tree already. This would tell me the game is in fact tracking overall CP, not just whatever you have left in your CP pool. Otherwise you should be able to go all the way to 17 CP with everything but OMCG unlocked.

However, one more thing that may be relevant is the phenomenon where you appear to gain CP when you select your Doctrine and its first ability. For instance, if I have 2.5 CP and select Defensive Doctrine, For the Fatherland, and Fortify the Perimeter, I don't have 0.5 CP left over but more like 0.66 CP. This is in line with the other info on the CoH-Stats page, so perhaps there's something to the myth after all.
