Assessing CoH Skills

By warhawks - 28th September 2009 - 13:55 PM

There is great debate as to whether or not Relic's current Online ranking system truly reflects a person's Company of Heroes skill level. Do online ranks and win/loss percentages provide an accurate reflection of a player's skill level? In this editorial article, I take a different approach in defining skill that looks beyond someone's Relic Online rank. That is, this article attempts to describe and categorize skill level in CoH without using rank (RO levels) and Win/Loss percentages as the primary indicator.

I started with my own perceptions of player skills which were formulated mostly by empirical evidence, that is, by being around the game for sometime, watching replays from the very best players and playing games with people of all skill levels. In order to validate my observations as well as help shape new ones, I asked some of the games top players to help in this study (through a series of questions). So without further ado, here we go.

The Premise

I believe there are primarily 4 skill related categories* of players in CoH and in each category there are certain traits/characteristics that can be seen by those players in this category.

The categories are:

1.) Top Players (TP)
2.) Very Good Players (VGP)
3.) Good/Average Players (G/A)
4.) Lower Level / Newer Players (L/N)

* a fifth category could be considered, but that would be for real noobs, that is, people just learning the game for the first time.

I believe that the majority of the people who play CoH fall within the last two groups, that is group numbers three and four (Good/Average Players and Lower/Newer Players); hence taking a standard bell curve and making it skewed to the right (positive) as follows:

^^ The above chart was not based on any statistics gathered, once again it is my opinion based on empirical evidence.

In addition I believe that over the last year Category #2 (VGP) and #3 (G/A) has seen the increase in players.
