General Tip of the Week #84 - Diversions

By sjceran - 16th March 2009 - 21:43 PM

Creating a diversion is a fundamental part of any strategy. People use diversions to distract and surprise opponents in order to flank, decap, or to basically divert the attention of your opponent from one area to another. By having your opponent focus on a distraction, you buy yourself more time to plan, move, and attack properly.

One of the most effective and commonly used diversions is sending an idle squad to capture enemy territory while a battle occurs somewhere else on the map. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain field control because your opponent will be focused on defending his other territory in dispute by your main assault. If you utilize this type of strategy in your game play, I guarantee you will get better. Just remember to not lose any squads! Use the mini-map and warning signs on the side of you screen to make sure your capping squad is not in any sort of danger.

Another type of distraction comes from flanking. If you are flanking a house, you want to distract the MG inside with a decoy squad, while your flame engineer or grenades come from another side. It is a very simply distraction, yet crucial to successfully flanking your opponent.

Flanks are not solely for MGs; you should always come from multiple directions to prevent any serious mishaps, like running into a mine or artillery. When you enter a battle field, attacking on multiple fronts will allow you to do more damage to your opponent because you are actually distracting your opponent. By this I mean that you can throw multiple grenades at multiple targets, and chances are they won’t dodge all of them. They may forget about a squad in negative cover, and if you are spread out enough, they may not see it until it is too late. You are ultimately creating a diversion where your opponent will have to continuously change screens to see all of his units. Chances are, he will retreat or even lose a squad if it was an effective assault, which gives you a lot of well deserved territory to capture. On the other hand, you will have to focus on your units in this type of situation too, so be sure to know exactly where your units are going and where they will be to avoid casualties.

Other distractions come from attacking an enemy unit, while sending off map artillery on a capping unit somewhere else on the map i.e. registered artillery. You can also distract your opponent while you prepare for a base rush or a demo charge run in order to avoid losses. Either way, players who use distractions, no matter how subtle, will play better than those who simply attack in blobs. Remember, you have the element of surprise with a distraction, so exploit it!
