Wehrmacht Tip of the Week #32 - Situational Response

By DucknCover - 13th February 2009 - 23:00 PM

This tip of the week will just give the basics of what you should look out for in either a 1v1 Match Up (MU) or in a team game. It's just to help out most beginners and there may even be something for intermediate players to learn. These are the basic facts to help you when you're playing CoH:

Resources

One of the things many players forget to do is to look at their opponent and the resources they own. The 'early' game will mostly determine the way the game pans out until you reach the 'end' game. So it is very important to look at what you have and what your opponent has. I have a list of what you should look out for and included examples:

If: A British HQ sets down on a Medium/High fuel point instead of a munitions point.
Then: Expect a fast Stuart or the dreaded 10 minute Cromwell.

If: An American opponent controls most of the fuel points.
Then: Expect either fast BAR's or a fast M8.

These are some of the other things you need to keep in mind:

Artillery:

As Wehrmacht, it should be no surprise to encounter artillery in most games since many of the allied abilities lets them create or use artillery.

British Artillery: The British Artillery (25-pounder) is usually a potential sign of a Brit player building a 'sim city'. If so, then it is usually located near the 'city' itself, containing emplacements like Vickers, Bofors, and 17-pounders. This can be an advantage, if you can survive to the end-game, because everything the British player has is all clumped up in one place.

There are of course a lot of counters to this, but some good hard counters could be a Panther, Stukas, a small army of pioneers, or even 1-2 infantry squads upgraded with 'schreks'. Firestorm and a V1 works just as well of course.

If your British opponent decides to build his artillery somewhere away from his 'sim city' (or he didn't make a sim city), then I think it is somewhat easier for you to sneak a vehicle in and inflict massive damage.

American Artillery: American artillery is a bit easier to deal with in terms of its health. It is much weaker than the 25-pounder and it is harder for your opponent to obtain (more CP's) as opposed to a Bit being able to buils artillery after teching up to Tier 2.

The same counters to the British artillery will work just as well against the American Howitzer.

Infantry:

American: The Americans are famous for their "riflespam" which has most wehrmacht players crying in anguish. Their upgrades are what makes them one of the most versatile infantry units in the game, so here are some ways to counter the upgrades:

BARs: The usual MG's and Volks would do, but sometimes it just isn’t enough. 4 stationary rifles upgraded with BAR's can focus fire and take down 3 Knights Cross Holders (KCH) vet 3 squads easily.

The first defense against the BAR's is veterancy. Vet 2 will make your infantry stand up to those rifles head to head. The second is grenadiers, who are much better than the Volks. After teching up, you will eventually get KCH, but those aren’t very useful to attack head on when facing a 'blob'. Use them to flank or catch a nearby capping rifle by surprise or to run after a retreating squad.

Grenades: Nothing can really be done against these. Even when your units are at vet 3, those grenades will tear up your squads like crazy. Vetting up is still advised to give you that extra defensive bonus. Other than that, practice dodging those nades, watch for the throwing animations, and keep your MGs alive to counter future assaults by the Americans.

Stickies: Just keep your vehicles a good distance away from the Rifles.

British: Some British players do not use their infantry due to them building a 'sim city'. If they do, then it is most likely that they will 'blob' with their Lieutenants or use Commandos.

British Blobs: The British blob is very hard to defeat and the only hard counter to them are Vehicles and Artillery units. Stukas will destroy them quickly while a Nebelwerfer will suppress them, giving your infantry time to attack without suffering too many casualties. Vehicles are also great against the 'blob', but you’re going to need to be careful with them because Cromwells and Firefly's could be waiting to strike.

Vehicles:

American Vehicles: The American vehicles are pretty weak in comparison with the Axis. They can however still be a pain in the ass, especially the M8. Here are some ways to destroy your opponent's vehicles other than building your own:

A great counter to these vehicles would be to ambush them with PAK's and shreck's. The PAK will do most of the damage to the vehicle while the shreck will protect the PAK if the vehicle tries to flank it. They will also finish off a retreating vehicle.

British Vehicles: The British vehicles pack a bit more punch. They can be buffed with a 'Command' tank which makes the powerful firefly's particularly potent.

The Cromwells can be taken down just like the American vehicles, but the Firefly's may get a little tricky because of their long range. They can be taken down with Stukas or any other form of artillery, but a great way to take care of them is by utilizing Stormtroopers (upgraded with 'schreks'. Storms are great since they can camouflage while you lure the fireflies out with your own vehicles.
