Wehrmacht Tip of the Week #34: Countering Commandos

By Siou - 23rd August 2009 - 15:11 PM

As everyone knows, Commandos are one of the most powerful anti-infantry squads on the game. This is the main reason why the majority of British players choose this doctrine over the other two.
Commandos are one of the biggest headaches for every Wehrmacht player, so in this tip I will post some of the most effective counters to them.

" Know your enemy" - Sun Tzu

Some information about Commandos :

To begin with, Commandos become available to the British player on the 3rd Command Point of the left hand side of the Royal Commando Support doctrine.
Their cost is 560 Manpower along with their glider; if the glider is in friendly territory, the British player can produce more commandos for 510 Manpower by sacrificing the advantage of dropping them behind the enemy lines for the additional 50 Manpower.
Furthermore, they have the ability to plant demos anywhere on the map for a 50 Munitions cost per demo.
Also, they can throw grenades for 25 munitions at a long range.
Finally, they can become temporarily camouflaged by using their free ability, "concealling smoke".

The Counters :
  • Piospam; Vetted flamethrower pioneers are an ideal counter to commandos, especially in the early stages of the game.
Just make sure that you keep your pioneers behind cover and keep an eye on them to avoid losing them due to focus-firing from your opponent.
  • Having 2 MG's covering each other's flanks will give you the chance to suppress the commandos and force them to retreat.
  • Well micro'd snipers can help you by killing members of the commando squad, which will either force the Brit player to retreat or try to chase them and get ambushed by the rest of your forces which will cover the sniper.
  • At least vet2 inf. Always try focus firing on them before they come at close range.
  • Mines; lure the commandos into mines to deal with them pretty easily.
  • Upgrade your Volks with mp40's, though I suggest that you invest in flamers and mines if you haven't already.
  • Throw grenades with your Grenadiers; I always throw a couple of grenades when I see commandos to kill them or at least prevent them from closing-in very fast by throwing a grenade in their possible path.
  • Spread out; Commandos are deadly in close range, so avoid having 2 Grens in the exact same place.
  • If you fear that your forces are not enough to counter the commandos while you have low MP try to get a medic bunker and stick close to it till you bring more forces to the battlefield and/or get some "zombie" grenadiers.
Protecting your bunker against commandos
A commando squad can easily come next to your bunker and place a demo which will destroy it.
To avoid this, put in the bunker an mg42 and a flamer pio which will prevent any "demo rush" attempt by your opponent
  • Use vehicles such as pumas and halftracks to have a solid anti-infantry force.
Tank-trapping an area will give your vehicles a free reign over any infantry force such as commandos.
  • Tanks are obviously going to give commandos lots of trouble, use them wisely.
  • What's more, you might want to take into account that anti-air units such as flak88's, pumas or ostwinds have a chance of shooting down the glider before the commandos come out!
Do not forget to salvage wrecks!
The commando glider is one of them. By sending your pios to salvage the destroyed glider, you can get some free munitions, so do not neglect this useful ability.
  • Stormtropers with mp44's and knights cross holders are very effective against commandos.
  • Doctrine abilities such as the passive "Zeal" ability will help; throwing some assault nades at them will help a lot including the "stun" effect those nades have.
  • Bundled nades from stormtroopers can kill many members of the squad, or even the whole squad if you hunt them right after throwing the nade.
  • Use "Propaganda War" on them for 100 munitions or the Officer "Force Retreat" ability on a single squad for 50 munitions.
  • A well placed goliath can finish a whole commando squad and maybe deal massive damage to any other infantry squad which might be close.
  • Vet 3 infantry will be a good investment which will allow your troops to give better fights against the commandos.
  • Upgrade your grens with lmg's, just like with mp40's on volks. I suggest that you upgrade them after you have flamethrowers and/or mines.
  • Last but not least, using arty such as mortars , nebels, stukas, will decimate any squad especially since most British players tend to "blob".
Hope you find these tips useful!
