General Tip #79: Bunker Clearing

By sjceran - 24th November 2008 - 21:45 PM

As we all know, medic bunkers are the primary stronghold of the mainstream T2 Wehrmacht strategy. A lot of people have asked me about effective ways to clear bunkers, so I decided to make a tip about it. By clearing a bunker I mean killing the MG42 inside. Although, most of the time you will not be able to destroy the bunker and clear it within the same battle. It is a crucial skill to master, since MG’s have massive radii inside bunkers. However, after the patch this may be obsolete depending on the beta, but it is currently a significant issue for Allied players.

Flame Engineers - a magnificent way to clear enemy bunkers. The proper way to clear a bunker with an MG42 inside is through flanking. Flanking from three sides, if applicable, would be best, but a two pronged attack will suffice. Send in a decoy squad of rifles to attract the mg fire. Then from an opposite side, send in your flame engineers with rifle support to clear the bunker. This is the most common and rewarding way to clear a bunker.

The flamethrower engineers have reached the bunker and will clear it in seconds. Meanwhile, the two rifles that are not suppressed will attack the volks squad defending the bunker. Notice the one rifle squad which is pinned. ALWAYS keep an eye on your units, so you don't lose any full squads. You must have at least 2 possible decoy squads, otherwise you may lose a squad or fail the flank. If I had only 1 decoy rifle, the volks would have picked him off and the MG would have re-targeted my flame engineers.

Weapon Support Center - WSC units are effective counters, but they may not work into your strategy. A sniper can easily clear a bunker as long as it is supported. Keep the sniper at a distance to keep it from getting suppressed, and do not let it die. Usually the first sniper shot will be a deterrent for the Wehr player, so they may pull out their MG. That is the opportune moment to charge and take territory. If you don’t want a sniper for some reason, you can build a mortar to clear the bunker instead. It will take longer and you will have to be weary of enemy snipers and mortars, but it will get the job done.
Artillery - pretty much self-explanatory, but it is one of the best ways to counter a med bunker. My favorite strategy behind this is to cause a distraction somewhere on the other side of the map, so the wehr player would not be looking at the med bunker. Then, have another squad run up to the med bunker while the fighting goes on across the map. Use the off-map arty option once you have the bunker in sight and then retreat. If you are lucky, it will kill the med bunker or some/all of the units inside and around the outside and even the medics. Or, you can be less discrete and blast it in the middle of a battle. They both work equally well.
M8 Mine - this is my personal favorite and my most recommended tip if you can pull it off. Place an M8 mine near the bunker. Once a unit triggers the mine it will wipe out all of the units inside and around the bunker, without fail. It is by far the most cost effective solution and can sometimes win you the game. My personal best was 1200 manpower for 50 munitions.

Place the M8 mine near the bunker. Towards the back is usually best since that's where the units enter the door. This is the same concept as mining any building entrance.

And enjoy the explosion :)

Mortar Pit - the best counter since it is cheap, yet powerful. Just build one within the vicinity of the med bunker and let it do its magic. Just be careful that it doesn’t get flanked. For 280 manpower, the defense and range of a mortar pit will make it worthwhile even without a med bunker on the field.
Demo charges - the commandos’ secret weapon. Place them using the smokescreen and it will kill the units inside.
Stuarts - early armor units that will effectively clear a bunker if given the time. It certainly isn’t the best counter, but it plays multiple roles once it is on the field. If you feel you can’t get a mortar pit up or you won’t have enough resources for a T3 truck, then a Stuart is a good alternative.

In most cases, a med bunker will make or break a game. Failing to destroy the med bunker usually due to the MG inside the bunker protecting it. Hopefully this tip will give you some insight on how to clear the med bunkers in the future.
