General Tip #65

Using the “Tactical” Map .

At all skill levels, micro and timing effect the game in a drastic way. Using the tactical map, can save vital seconds and minutes which can change the outcome of a game.

What is the Tactical Map?
The tactical map is a scaled up version of the Mini-map displayed in the taskbar. It shows a brief overview of the map in which you are playing on and displays buildings, terrain, friendly units and enemy units in line of sight as they are positioned on the map.

How Do I Access The Tactical Map?
Clicking the blue button with the white arrow on it displayed on the left hand side of the taskbar will display the tactical map. Pressing the 0 key on the right number pad will also display the tactical map.

What can I use the tactical map for?

"Capping orders"
The tactical map can be used to “queue” large “shift orders” (for those that don’t know, holding shift and giving your unit orders will “queue up’ the commands as you have issued them). Left clicking on one of your units while viewing the tactical map will allow you to control that unit from the tactical map perspective. This is excellent for queueing up large capping orders using shift commands.

Unit Control
Controlling several units at one time can be a hassle for many players. Using the tactical map, you could send 5 squads in different directions in a matter of seconds witch leaves more time to micro each unit individually. The Tactical map is also effective for large assaults/counter attacks as you can rally several units to a position on the map in a few moments to deal with large enemy activity.

"Sound Scouting"
Scrolling over an enemy position will often result in hearing the movement of enemy troops or enemy construction. Using the tactical map you can quickly view your enemies Head Quarters to see what strategy he may be using. I.E. if you are an American player and are against Wehrmacht you can scroll over your enemies HQ as you assemble your barracks/wsc/triage centre(lol?) and listen in on how many pioneers he has made and/or if he has constructed a Wehrmacht Quarters or not. However, you must have your volume up to a reasonable volume to be able to hear the units/constructions clearly.
