Tip of the Week #76 - Cannon Damage

By Eph2.8-9 - 17th November 2009 - 04:10 AM

This is the first of a series of Tips of the Week on damage types and exploiting them for maximum effectiveness. You know about directional armor. Now, enhance your Kane's Wrath gaming career with knowledge obtained from the Tacitus 1.02 XML files about units that are uniquely vulnerable or resistant to cannon damage.

Cannon damage, almost without exclusion, is your best tool against vehicles. In general, no damage type inflicts more punishment on any kind of vehicle, particularly tanks and armored walkers. What's the drawback? It is less effective against structures than grenade damage (75% versus 100%) and not nearly as useful against infantry as the gun damage type, as most infantry take only 25% cannon damage from a weapon that actually hits them. Furthermore, cannon damage is not only good against large vehicles, it's often inflicted by large vehicles. The fastest ground units that do cannon damage are Scorpion Tanks and Mechapedes, meaning that driving in a bunch of fast cannon-armed vehicles to shoot up Harvesters is somewhat difficult compared to using faster harassment units such as Bikes, Pitbulls, Orcas, and Stormriders.

All main battle tanks, tier 3 armor, tier 3 defenses, and epic unit main weapons inflict cannon damage. Each faction also has at least one infantry type that does cannon damage.

Damage formulas

Damage is computed in the following manner in Kane's Wrath:

Target health lost = Weapon damage × Target's armor for that damage type.

Since the armor percentage value is multiplied by the weapon damage instead of subtracted, as in Starcraft, the armor value in Kane's Wrath is a lot more important.

Directional armor revisited

Most vehicles take 110% damage when hit on their sides and 150% damage when hit on their rear armor. Structures, aircraft, and infantry do not have directional armor. There are a few notable exceptions though.
  • Harvesters do not have directional armor
  • The MARV does not have side armor. Its rear armor penalty is only 125% damage instead of 150%.
  • Titans only take 120% rear armor damage rather than the usual 150%
  • Nod Attack Bikes and MCVs do not have directional armor.
  • Scrin Seekers, Corrupters, Mechapedes, and Drone Platforms do not have directional armor.
  • Scrin shields do not take directional damage. Shields provide the shielded unit with a second layer of health and have a different armor class than the unit, in general, taking more damage from every weapon except sniper. For example, the Annihilator Tripod has 100/75/25/25 Cannon/Rocket/Gun/Grenade armor and 7500 health. Adding a shield to it adds another 2500 health, but the shield is more vulnerable to rocket, gun, and grenade damage.

Cannon damage

The following weapons do cannon damage in Kane's Wrath:
GDI: Guardian Cannon, Sonic Emitter, Predator Tank, Shatterer, Battle Base cannons, Zone Trooper, Mammoth Tank cannons, Juggernaut, MARV cannon, Titan, Behemoth, Zone Shatterer, Zone Raider grenades
Nod: Laser Turret, Obelisk, Fanatic, Scorpion Tank, Avatar laser, Specter, Redeemer lasers, Vertigo bomb, Purifier laser, Enlightened
Scrin: Photon Cannon, Storm Column, Mechapede Disintegrator segment, Devourer Tank, Tripod, PAC drones, Hexapod disks, Lightning Spike, Mothership

Cannon vulnerability

Most buildings take 75% damage from cannon weapons. Most vehicles and aircraft take 100%. Infantry typically take 25%. There are some notable exceptions, though.

GDI: Shatterers actually have as much health as a Predator tank, but they take 150% damage from cannon weapons. Slingshots have less health, but they have the same cannon penalty as well. Titans also have a 10% cannon damage penalty, meaning that they take 110% damage from cannon weapons.
Nod: Flame tanks take 150% damage from cannon weapons. Bikes also have a 10% cannon penalty, so they take 110% damage from cannon, not that you would notice.
Scrin: Seekers take 110% damage from cannon weapons. Cultists have a 25% cannon penalty, absorbing 50% cannon damage instead of the usual 25% for infantry.

The charged Reaper Tripod laser, capable of slicing through the thickest of tank armor, is utterly ineffective against a woman in a red dress with bombs.

Cannon resistance

Some units are especially equipped to handle loads of cannon damage outside of mechanics such infantry taking less damage from tank shells due to the shells missing. These units can shrug off seemingly impossible amounts of blasting from your tanks and come out smiling.

Harvesters: All Harvesters take 95% damage from cannon weapons. You probably never noticed.
GDI: Zone Troopers, Zone Raiders, and Commandos take an incredible 5% damage from cannon weapons. This is why a single Zone Trooper squad upgraded with Power Packs can kill an Avatar without losing anyone, or only lose one member without the upgrade. Composite Armor/Tib Field Suit infantry only absorb 12% cannon damage. The MARV only takes 43% damage from cannon weapons, but that's its highest value, so use cannon damage against it.
Nod: Black Hand, Tiberium Troopers and Commandos take a paltry 5% damage from cannon weapons. The Redeemer also only takes 30% damage from cannon weapons, but again, this is its highest value, so use cannon damage against it.
Scrin: Shock Troops and Masterminds take 5% cannon damage. Ravagers take a mere 20%. The Hexapod takes only 33% damage from cannon types, but that's still the highest value.

Shock Troops, with their high cannon resistance, are effective against main battle tanks such as Scorpions—but watch out for Dozer Blades!
