A major factor in increasing one’s experience and skill in any competitive game is the importance of countering. In League of Legends, this is no different. Be it adapting to the new characters introduced every two weeks or learning how to work around tried and true strategies used by older characters, countering is amazingly important. This series focuses on this element of the game by offering techniques, lesser known secrets and general tips to avoid getting dominated by that flavor of the month strategy.
How to counter... Mundo, the Madman of Zuan!
Mundo goes where he pleases. Mundo's ABC of success: Always Be Cleaving. Mundo Mundo Mundo, loved by many, hated by more. Mundo is the stereotype soak. He's an off tank with a lot of single target damage potential and a small (but not insignificant) amount of Area of Effect damage.
Mundo has a skill shot with very high early game damage and a slowing effect. Cleaver allows him to out zone most opponents in the lane and last hit under a tower with ease. He has an Area of Effect toggle which deals constant damage and reduces all crowd controls effects on him, making him very hard to pin down. His third skill gives him a lot of attack damage. You shouldn't let Mundo push up your lanes, because he can deal 100+ damage to towers in one hit at early levels with no items! His ultimate is very powerful, granting him both a movement speed boost and incredible regeneration over 12 seconds. Though fear not, even with this great ultimate, he is still killable.
Countering in the lane
Stay behind your minions and avoid close contact with Dr. Mundo. Why do you want to do this? Well, Mundo controls a large zone around him, but the minions break the zone. Be careful when Mundo enters the bush as you don't know where he will be and his Cleavers can catch you by surprise. Going into a bush (even when Mundo stands outside of it) is not the smartest thing either, because there are no minions close to the bush so Mundo can Cleaver into it and hit you.
Also, unless you have a clear advantage, try to keep your distance. If Mundo presses E he gains a significant amount of damage and can quickly burst an over confident opponent down. Don't try to push Mundo up to his tower in the hope that he will miss last hits. Dr. Mundo has a very easy time killing minions under the tower. Masochism and Cleaver allow him to last hit reliability, even with tower attacks thrown in.
So we can't come close and we must stay behind our minions. What does that scream? Long ranged harassment, indeed! Zilean, Ashe, Karthus, can give Mundo a hard time because Mundo is easily kitable in the early game (also later on, but he shrugs off the damage). Just make sure he stays low on health, so that he can't miss Cleavers and can't do crazy stuff.
Those four champion all posses the mightiest weapon against Dr. Mundo, Grievous Wounds (= 50% Healing Reduction). If timed correctly, which means when Dr. Mundo is low, they will shut him down and make his ultimate very weak. They also all posses at least one ranged harassment skill.
A well timed Silence blocks Mundo from using his ultimate (or even activating Burning Agony and his ultimate!) and it gives you the time necessary to destroy him.
Ignites damages and gives Grievous Wounds, this is the #1 Summoner Spell to counter Dr. Mundo
