Tip: Casting Animation

By Feanor - 19th December 2012 - 19:52 PM

Every champion has four abilities, some even more! That's a discovery nearly everybody makes whilst playing their first game. Some abilities have channelling, whilst others can be cast instantly... or not? Although they are listed as 'instant cast' some aren't as instant as others! Advantage or disadvantage?

Casting animation

Abilities
Nearly all non-channelled abilities have a cast animation. This means that your character will perform a short animation before actually casting the spell, giving you <0.5 seconds to react to it. You can use this in your advantage by activating spellshields (Sivir and Nocturne) or dodging skill shots with natural blinks and/or Flash.

A good example is Morgana. Her Dark Binding has a casting animation, which allows you to react to it as soon as you see it. Her Tormented Soil also has a casting animation but it's still casted instantly. Players with very high reflexes can even block her ultimate with blinks or spellshields because of the casting animation. Taking your time to learn the different animations on champions will help keep you one step ahead.

The casting animation can also be used in your own favour when fighting someone. Some spells have a very lengthy casting animation, Trundle's Contaminate for example. Whilst Trundle is performing this cast animation, you can instantly use his Rabid Bite or even Pillar of Filth. This can also be used with smartcast. For example you bind Q W R to smartcast on Annie. Next thing you do is press Q W R on a poor enemy. What happens? The spells get queue'd and they will fire faster than when you wouldn't have smartcasted.

Auto attacks
Besides from Kayle with her Righteous Fury enabled, nobody has an instant auto attack. Ranged attacks have to travel a long distance and melee attacks have to finish their animation, or don't they?

If you play a ranged character, moving as soon as your projectile is fired will result in a better positioning on your part and no loss of DPS if you time it right. Same counts for melee characters. If you play a champion for a decent amount of games, you will start to notice when your auto attack does damage so you can pre-cancel the animation for better positioning.

Slow auto attack projectiles, such as the Soraka banana, or Morgana's auto attack are also very useful for poking under turrets. Their attacks travel so slow that they can run out of tower range before the auto attack hits the wanted target. Use this in your advantage to zone your enemies even further behind their towers.

To fully master your champions, you will have to be completely comfortable using their animations. For example Gragas can cast his Barrel Roll while still being in the casting animation of Body Slam. Be careful for a reactive Fiora though, she can easily parry your attacks! There is a whole lot to learn with this this tip, but it is vital knowledge for high level play.
