The story picks up five years after Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare ended. By using Call of Duty 4’s antagonist as a martyr, the Ultranationalists manage to take control of Russia. Once this has been accomplished, Vladimir Makarov, who was a right-hand man of Imran Zakhaev, manages to spark a war through terrorist activities that could bring the world to an end.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer offers a variety of game modes and considerable improvements over the class system. There are 70 ranks and a Prestige option to gain more custom class slots if you reset your rank. The highest achievable level is Prestige 10, Level 70.
Classes include a Primary Weapon (usually an assault rifle or submachine gun), a Secondary Weapon (can be a handgun, rocket or grenade launcher and more), Equipment, Special Grenades and three different Perks. If used enough, Perks can become ‘Pro’ meaning they are improved without any tradeoff.

Equipment:

Frag grenade: Cookable fragmentation explosive, fuse of five seconds.
Semtex: Sticky explosive that cannot be thrown back and can stick to enemies. Has a shorter fuse than a frag grenade.
Throwing Knife: Can be quickly thrown to instantly kill an enemy. You only start with one but you can pick it up after using it or get another one by using Scavenger.
Tactical Insertion: A flare that can be placed anywhere in the map to determine your next spawn position.
Blast Shield: A helmet that reduces damage taken from explosions but restricts vision.
Claymore: An anti-personnel laser trip mine.
C4: Remote detonated plastic explosive.

Slot 1 Perks:

Marathon: Infinite sprint ability.
Marathon Pro: Climb obstacles quicker.

Scavenger: Resupply ammunition from fallen enemies.
Scavenger Pro: Extra ammunition to start with.

Sleight of Hand: Reload faster.
Sleight of Hand Pro: Bring up sights faster.

Bling: Allows two attachments on your primary weapon.
Bling Pro: Allows for two attachments on your secondary weapon.

One Man Army: Take six seconds to change your class at any time. This perk replaces your secondary weapon.
One Man Army Pro: Take three seconds to change your class.

Slot 2 Perks:
Stopping Power: Increase the damage of each bullet.
Stopping Power Pro: Increase the damage of bullets against vehicles.

Lightweight: Lets you walk and run faster.
Lightweight Pro: Aiming down the sights is quicker immediately after sprinting.

Hardline: One less kill is needed to achieve a killstreak.
Hardline Pro: One less death is needed to achieve a deathstreak.

Steady Aim Pro: When sniping, you can hold your breath for longer.

Ninja: You are made invisible to heartbeat sensors.
Ninja Pro: You are silent when moving.

SitRep: Enemy Tactical Insertions, Claymores and other explosives can be seen more clearly.
SitRep Pro: Enemy footsteps are easier to hear.

Last Stand: Upon taking enough damage to kill you, instead you lie on the ground and are able to fire your handgun. After a small time, or if any more damage is taken, you will die.
Last Stand Pro: When on the ground, you can use your equipment as well as your handgun.

Game Modes:

Team Deathmatch: Teams of up to six players face off to reach the score limit first.
Free For All: No teams exist and anyone can kill anyone.
Domination: Capture three stationary flags around the map and hold them to gain points.
Ground War: Large matches of 18 players swapping between Team Deathmatch and Domination.
Sabotage: A bomb in the middle of the map has to be captured and used to destroy the enemy objective.
Headquarters Pro: One team is on offense and the other is tasked with defending an objective. The offending team carries a bomb that has to detonate at one of two places on the map. Teams switch half-way.
Capture the Flag: Steal and take the flag to a specific point on the map to score points.
Demolition: One team defends and the other team attacks two objectives.
3rd Person Team Deathmatch: Team Deathmatch mode played through a third-person view.
3rd Person 1 vs 1: A one on one battle in third-person view.
Hardcore modes (increased damage and no HUD): Team Deathmatch, 3rd Person Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, 3rd Person Cagematch.

Technology

The engine used to run Modern Warfare 2 is a step up from the one used in Call of Duty 4. The IW 4.0 engine is capable of rendering more expansive terrain with little performance hit and better graphical detail. A significant improvement has been made over the infinitely spawning enemies that have been present in previous Call of Duty titles with dynamic artificial intelligence creating smarter enemies so the game does not need to rely on their population to challenge the player. Upon playing the level more than once, the enemies will behave differently.
The multiplayer side has seen significant changes in networking. Modern Warfare 2 is the first game Infinity Ward has tested IWNet, a matchmaking service functioning through Peer-to-Peer connections, with. Whilst improvements have been made to decrease lag and provide a solid multiplayer interface via P2P connections, it has been met with considerable disappointment by the PC audience as it replaced the existing arrangement of dedicated servers for online gaming.
