Homeworld Remastered Collection released

By FallenXE - 14th March 2015 - 16:37 PM

February saw the launch of the Homeworld Remastered Collection by Gearbox Software, famously known for their work on the Borderlands series as well as holding the rights to the Duke Nukem IP.

For those not in the know, Homeworld was the first three-dimensional Real-Time Strategy game that was released back in 1999, alongside games like Tiberian Sun and Free Space, and of which became a cult classic for its innovation as well as the hugely enthralling and Battlestar Galactica-esque plot.

Originally created by Relic Entertainment, the Remastered Collection contains both the original Homeworld 1 and 2 as well as their remastered counterparts. The RC sees a significantly large upgrade in terms of streamlining both game's graphics that sees it support, in the words of Gearbox, High Definition, Ultra High Definition and 4K resolutions making it hugely contemporary looking and not like an out of place 1999 time warp.

The User Interface has also been streamlined and refined to look from that of Star Wars: Rebellion (free cookie to anyone who can remember that game) to this thing of beauty:

Current criticisms of the remastered collection mostly stem from the decision by Gearbox to nerf down some of the gameplay tactics, ie. the formation and engagement stance of the ships and fighters no longer requiring fuel, of the original Homeworld to more closely resemble that of it's sequel (which has to be admitted was not as good as the first).

Regardless, Homeworld Remastered Collection is a timely reminder of Relic's magnum opus and the decision to include both the two original games as well as the remastered couple is a wise decision to enable current and past gamers to decide for themselves whether the RC has done its predecessor justice.

With that, I leave you with the introduction cutscene from the Homeworld 1 - Remastered:
