Hello there, this guide will explain how to kill a troll without losing your own units. This is very important, especially on certain maps like Nanduhirion, and many new players have a problem dealing with the troll lairs. The standard procedure is to just send pikemen with defensive stance to kill the troll, but it won't work if you are playing as Goblins or Angmar.
Don't Waste Powers
Never waste a power like Rallying Call, War Chant, or Fell Wind on a lair! You will need those for other situations and there are other ways to take out the lairs!
As Goblins, to get pikemen you have to build a Fissure, which is expensive and its units are mainly useless in the early game phase.
As Angmar, Rhudaur Spearmen are too weak and almost always die before they can kill the troll.
The solution is easy! If the troll goes too far from his lair, he will just slowly walk back to it, giving you an opportunity.
Goblins
You just need one battalion of archers, and order them to attack when the beast is far away, before running away when it gets close. This also works for any army except Angmar. The video demonstrates the strategy:
Angmar
Axe throwers have a low attack range, so the hit and run tactic from the video above unfortunately won't work. Instead, you can send one Rhudaur Spearmen unit in defensive stance and one Rhudaur Axe Thrower unit in aggressive stance, but this is more expensive and is still not guaranteed to work. But there is other way, using a builder along with your spearmen. The video below demonstrates this strategy:
Get the Outpost Fast!
If you play on Nanduhirion, it's always good to take the outpost before killing the troll, to start gaining resources faster. Just send Gundabad Orcs or Goblin Warriors and sneak up past the troll lair when the troll is on the other side of his lair.
