Unofficial 2.02 is a community-produced patch that was created as a means of fixing 2.01's numerous bugs and grave imbalances in order to make the game more enjoyable. Although 2.02 is preferred mostly by skilled players who are better aware of the many failings plaguing the official 2.01 patch, it is designed to be used not just in ClanWars, but also in Open Play by all online players. The patch also contains an easy to use game launcher that will allow you to choose between either 2.01 or 2.02 when starting the game.
Why Play 2.02?
Why do the vast majority of competitive players prefer the 2.02 patch? Spoony, former ClanWars Global Admin and producer of the original 2.02 patch, explains what's wrong with 2.01:
As we all know, balance and bugs have always been a severe problem in Rise of the Witch-King. The game did bring new, exciting units into the BfME2 fold - but in many cases, poor balance and innumerable bugs have rendered them too powerful or not powerful enough: most of the mini-heroes, some of Angmar's spells, and the new elite infantry, to name but a few. It's also rather sad that we have had to make rules in the ClanWars league limiting the use of Battlewagons, Fell Wind, Lindon Horse Archers, and Warg Sentries in order to prevent exploits.
2.02 is quite simple in its design - make underused aspects of the game better. In 2.02, there is no such thing as a "useless" or "overpowered" unit. The few overpowered units in 2.01, such as Boromir and Mirkwood Archers, have been toned down slightly, while the many underpowered units, such as Sharku, Faramir, and Black Numenorians, to name but a few, are now stronger. Other underused aspects of the game, like personal Banner Carriers and Heroic Statues, have also been improved.
In addition, very many bugs have been fixed, including Lindon Horse Archers' trample, the Carnage and Deadshot exploits, Half-Troll Swordsmen attack speed, MotW's vision all over the map bug, most "glitch" Create-a-Heroes, archer Bombard exploits, weapon scalars vs. Fellbeasts, Siege Hammers' damage, Dark Glory's negative armor bonus, and many,
many more!
