Starcraft 2 Beginner's Guide

Purpose of this guide
The purpose of this guide is to help you, the new StarCraft 2 player, learn the basic points of multiplayer gaming in StarCraft 2. The goal is to outline what you need to know and what you need to be proficient at in order to be an effective player.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is aimed specifically at players who are new to Starcraft 2, find themselves struggling in lower leagues (practice, bronze, silver), and have little to no experience with the original Starcraft.

What should I expect from this guide?

Truthfully, you should not expect this guide to make you a better player. Starcraft 2 is the type of game where serious improvement comes only from practice. This game requires a great deal of concentration and habitual repetition, and building this discipline can't come from reading strategy guides - it can only come from practice.

There are two ways to win games in lower leagues. You can take a shortcut and learn a good cheese build order/timing attack, or you can do it the right way and learn how to properly build an economy, and control your production. The shortcut will get you to the same place the right way will, but not any further. You'll lack the foundation necessary to compete in the Diamond and Masters leagues. Learning solid economy and production mechanics, however, will give you a foundation upon which other skills can later be built.

Thus, you should expect this guide to teach you the right way to play Starcraft 2: starting with a solid foundation of habits and mechanics.
