Game Overview

Starcraft 2 is a game set 500 years in the future: far away in the Koprulu Sector. It is set to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy with fast gameplay and Blizzard balance. It also features an engaging story line, vibrant 3D graphics, and full map-making / scripting. Its multiplayer will be run off the successful Battle.Net with great tournaments, ladders, and of course the magical Starcraft gameplay.

There are three races in Starcraft 2: the mighty Protoss, the swarming Zerg, and the sly Terrans. The Protoss feature massive and expensive units that can take a beating. They must micromanage more than the other races to keep their units alive, and of course, they must take risks. They are the masters of the frontal assault. The Zerg conversely have weak units and cheap units that seem to be everywhere! They will swarm your base in their never relenting assaults. The Terran race may not have the powerful weapons of the Protoss, and they may not have the numbers of the Zerg, but they certainly have the brains to back up there attacks. The have all the features a great turtling civilization needs, and they have a myriad of tricks up their sleeves to make up for lack of numbers and strength.

Franchise History

Starcraft 2 is the sequel to Blizzards stunningly successful Real-Time Strategy Starcraft. The original Starcraft was released in 1998 with an Expansion Pack, Starcraft: Brood War being released the same year. This game was arguably the finest RTS ever created, having sold over nine million copies. It has been one of the best selling video game second only to the Sims. The original was based in the Koprulu Sector were a Confederation of Terran were engaged in a civil war. The mighty Protoss quietly looked over these humans until they became aware of a new race: the Zerg who were feeding off the Terrans while ultimately planning to assimilate the Protoss into their gene pool. Many eons ago, the ancient race of the Xel-Naga had molded the Protoss into what they are. They were unhappy with their creation and thus moved on to create the Zerg. But the Zerg turned on their creators and destroyed them. Now the Zerg prepared to vanquish their brother, the Protoss. They descended upon them. The Protoss were slowly beaten back until their home world of Auir was in ruins. Moving into the events of Brood War the Zerg Overmind was destroyed and the infested Terran, Kerrigan, attempted to take over the Zerg Brood. With the Protoss, their homeworld was in ruins so they to were trying to heal the fractures in their empire. They retreated to the Dark Templar homeworld of Shakuras. The Terran were scattered by the war as well, but the United Earth Directorate, the government of Earth, sent an expeditionary fleet to the Koprulu in order to see if the Protoss or Zerg posed a threat to Earth itself. In the final chapter of the saga as told so far, Omega, the Protoss, Terran, Zerg, and UED all battle one another above the molten homeworld of the Zerg: Char. The story is not over, and Starcraft II brings us into the future as Tychus J. Findlay is released from stasis. War will once again descend upon the Galaxy!

Blizzard and Battle.net

Blizzard Entertainment (more commonly referred to as simply Blizzard) is a game developer set in Irvine, California. Blizzard has maintained an unparalleled reputation for quality since its creation in 1994. Blizzard is known for it's three main franchises: Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft. The company's first game was Warcraft: Orcs and Humans released in 1994. The game drew much press, and was quickly labeled as one of the best strategy games of 1994. The game's sequel, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, won many awards, and earned Blizzard the fame it deserved, by giving the company its first Game of the Year award.

Blizzard's second game was Diablo, an RPG game set in a fantasy environment. Blizzard's sequel; Diablo II set records as the fastest selling PC game at the time of it's release.

The company's third franchise was Starcraft was released in 1998; and was quickly labeled as a best-seller in PC Data Magazine. The game's expansion pack: Starcraft: Brood War was named best expansion of 1998 and is still considered by many critics to be one of the best add-on products to date. Starcraft can be seen as the dawn of competitive online gaming, and many players believe it to be the greatest strategy game ever made.

With the game's online came the beginning of Battle.net; which is Blizzard's own online network. Battle.net provides an online lobby for players to chat, as well as a user-friendly environment to challenge opponents over the internet. Battle.net is used for hosting online tournaments, as well as playing casually with friends over a secure online service. There is no hourly or monthly fee to use Battle.net, and there is no startup charge. Battle.net has earned worldwide acclaim as one of the best, most user-friendly online interfaces.


With Blizzard and Battle.net, the future of Starcraft II looks very bright, indeed.
