The Chinese Civilization

The foundations of Chinese as an united country were the Qin Dynasty (秦) Emperor's imposition of a common system of writing in the 3rd century BC and the development of a state ideology based on Confucianism in the 2nd century BC. China alternated between periods of political unity and disunity, with occasionally conquests by foreign peoples, most of whom were assimilated into the Chinese population. Cultural and political influences from many parts of Asia, carried by successive waves of immigration, expansion, and assimilation, merged to create Chinese culture. Although the Qin Dynasty is what Chinese civilization is based on, during the time of AoE3 China was ruled by the Ming and Qing Dynasties. China has the highest population limit of any other civilization in the game. Instead of villager cards, China can send "Migration Cards" where you get a number of villagers for each Village and Town Center you have. China builds "Villages" instead of houses. A Village is a combination of a Livestock Pen and House. In addition, Villages can also Garrison units, making them a good building to use out in the open where you villagers might be vulnerable.

The Indian Civilization

In AoE3's timeline, the Muhgals had control over India. India in the 16th century presented a fragmented picture of rulers, both Muslim and Hindu, who lacked concern for their subjects and who failed to create a common body of laws or institutions. Outside developments also played a role in shaping events. The circumnavigation of Africa by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498 allowed Europeans to challenge Arab control of the trading routes between Europe and Asia. In Central Asia and Afghanistan, shifts in power pushed Babur of Ferghana (in present-day Uzbekistan) southward, first to Kabul and then to India. The dynasty he founded endured for more than three centuries. Read more about their historical significance here on Wikipedia.

The Indian Economy is very unique because the Indian villagers cost Wood instead of Food. This presents a challenge because not only does Wood gather much slower than food, but you must gather it and the required resources to build a wonder in order to advance in age. India has access to Wonders such as the Taj Mahal, which grants a Cease Fire ability, and the Agra Fort, a defence building similar to the European Fort. Besides this brought India the almighty War Elephant back!

The Japanese Civilization

During the time of AoE3 while Europeans were battling for control of the new year, Japan was in their Feudal Age. The "feudal" period of Japanese history, dominated by the powerful regional families (daimyo) and the military rule of warlords (shogun), stretched from the twelfth through the nineteenth centuries. The Emperor remained but was (mostly) kept to a de jure figurehead ruling position. This time is usually divided into periods following the reigning family of the shogun. Read more about their historical significance here on Wikipedia.

The Japanese economy is unique because Japanese villagers cannot hunt animals. Instead, Japanese monks and villagers can build Shrines. Shrines attract nearby animals and generates resources. The more animals the Shrine attracts the more resources you gain from the Shrine.
