Spotlight with Beterwel

By LATINO - 1st November 2018 - 22:32 PM

Today, GameReplays.Org brings to you another edition of our Spotlight interview series with the players of Battle For Middle Earth (BFME). Centauer's guest for today's segment is Beterwel

1. GameReplays : Hello , thanks for doing this week's Spotlight. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is JoŽl Pinna. Iím a 26 years old and I live in the Netherlands. Currently Iím finishing my masters Strategic Management which will be done in February. This is about business strategy, not about gaming strategy by the way.

2. GameReplays : Tell us a bit about your online gaming history?

Iím actually not that much of a gamer. I played some CoD online on PS. Also some Star Wars Battlefront. I like to watch streams from AoE2, like TheViper and T90official, although I donít play the game. Probably has to do with some nostalgia as I used to play these games when I was still a kid.

3. GameReplays : Why did you join GR?

So I was playing quickmatch on EA server. On some point I noticed that putting archers on the wall and spamming units like versus easy AI only wasnít going to make me win, I started asking people in game what to do to improve. I received a link to gamereplays.org. I found all these guides, masterguides, quickmatch pathways etc. I started reading and reading and watching a lot of replays. I used Sjostyís replays mostly, because I think he was an awesome Isen player. Also watched a lot of Buttaís replays, not particularly to learn Isen, but mostly just because this guy was amazing overall. Nowadays I still link Beginners to gamereplays.org, but unfortunately it seems they generally can be arsed to read guides or become good this way.

I decided to pick one faction to start executing strategies. I chose Isengard, as I noticed not many people were playing this faction compared to your regular Gondor camper and Rohan pickers. People probably felt safe behind their walls, which was why most picked these factions I guess. After some time I started to get the hang of the pathways and strategies. By spamming qm, I really improved my Isen and managed to reach top 20 at some point as unknown player. I wasnít actively involved with the BFME community. I quit the game after the server shutdown by EA. Without quickmatch, all the fun was sucked out of this game for me. I feel sorry for all the new players that didnít experience the old quickmatch. They missed out on the best part of BFME online! Moreover, I got a relationship and it seems girls donít like BFME too much

I came back about 1.5 years ago and started playing 2v2 Anorien on Gameranger. In the same time I became some more active on gamereplays.org again. I found out there was still a fairly active community and some sort of replacement for the quickmatch system. Although, itís nothing compared to the old system, itís the best we got so after improving some again I started playing this.

4. GameReplays : What is your favorite game?

Well definitely BFME. I like competitive play and this is the game Iím good at. I also like playing some games offline, mostly games with a good story. Knights of the Old Republic is pretty good, also played Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim on the Playstation. Nice games, but nowadays I only play BFME. Sometimes some FIFA with friends when weíre drunk, pretty much fun as being drunk adds some extra dimension to the game.

5. GameReplays : What is your favorite game genre? Why?

Seems pretty straight forward. I watch streams of AoE2 and play BFME. RTS of course.

6. GameReplays : So, how did you first get started with BFME?

In the weekends I would hang out with my best mate as kid. We would secretly buy some booze lock ourselves in the room and game all night while drinking. We tried all kind of games on Playstation and PC. On some point, we started playing BFME campaign and later trying it online in turns. I decided to buy the game aswell and we started playing together. He quit on some point and I got addicted to Quickmatch and continued playing.

7. GameReplays : What do you like so much about BfME, that has kept you playing the game for years?

I guess itís the community, the flaming which is so funny, the intensive games and the will to improve. I quit my job to study again and Iím currently writing my master thesis which means I have a lot of free time available. This helps a lot.

8. GameReplays :What is your favorite army and Match-up?

Well it depends on what game mode weíre talking.
1v1: I still prefer Isengard in terms of competitiveness. Its my best army. However, I like to play Gondor vs FoD best in terms of most fun. Especially when I play versus feeders like TheTower. Kappa

I hate fucking FoL mirrors. So boring some stupid horses running around the map to kill farms all the time. I rather instantly quit than play this shit. Just my luck, this is the match up I always get in tourneys.

2v2: Gondor Mordor versus Rohan Isen. Such fun to rush Isen base with fully upgraded horses and Mordor Leadership.
FFA: Isen is the stongest, but fully matured Rohan army is really nice to play.
3v3 and 4v4 is for naaaaabs.

9. GameReplays : What is your favorite map, and who is your best Team game partner?
Favorite map in 1v1 is either Dunharrow or Westfold. However, I like to change maps and play them all once. As former Isen player I really dislike the Rohan map . So imbalanced for FoD.

In 2v2 I really enjoy playing Wold. Many times its like a 1v1 that shifts into a 2v2 during the game. Really fun to play. Also Anorien makes for some pretty nice games most of the times, but playing it too often bores me.

In competitive play I love to play with ZeD. This guy is amazing. He can bash all players, and when I say bash I mean like really BASH them 2 minute games gg no re. However this guy is really stress sensitive and his performance fluctuates more than he would like. Together we make a great team with amazing synch. We donít have to talk much because we just know what the other is doing most of the times.

I really like to play with Alan too. Although we donít have the best synch, this guy is an amazing team player. He adapts to his opponents, micros 6 units and heroes at same time and sees everything on the map. His awareness is insane. He also taught me so much so fast in a short period of time just by playing some CWs with him. He guides you from start to end. I would recommend all decent players to play some team games with this guy. It will improve your gameplay so much so fast. He likes to provoke and flame people, but always for fun. Also his stream does not make retarded sounds that retarded people in the chat keep repeating which makes his stream the best to enjoy beers and pizza.

Also Oats is an amazing player. We donít play much, but he is my strategy discussion mate. We discuss all ethics concerning what bugs are allowed or not, how to execute them, which strategies (however lame they are) can work or wonít work. Great insights are gained here.

For the fun games it is so much fun to play with BoogyMan, Shanks, old man mara, TheTower, and of course Beasty (TEAM HOLLAND). Not the most skilled games, but so much fun with a lot of flaming, screaming and laughing on discord. I must add Marje to this list too. Although his character is incompatible with most of the players of this community, we always seem to get along well. He is an amazing player with a lot of sense for the BFME game.

10. GameReplays : What would you do to change or improve game?

No balance changes, no bug fixes, just add a quick match system like the old days and this game will be GREAT again.

11. GameReplays : How did it feel to play BfME when you had your "noob" time and what is the difference to your current status as a player?

I think I enjoyed the game more even when I lost. I became too competitive when my skills in BFME increased. I also still have bad days or maybe weeks where I lose almost every game I play. Really pisses me off sometimes. I think as noob you donít care too much about this.

12. GameReplays : Playing against a Forces of Darkness or Forces of Light opponent?

FoD vs FoL, I donít care too much what side I play as long as it is not mirrored.

13. GameReplays : Killing a high ranked Gandalf the White, or wiping out an entire castle with a Balrog?

Definitely killing an entire castle with Balrog. I even tried killing an entire FoD base with Balrog. It is possible when you are playing offline, but online because of the lag you just canít succeed. Too shit really

14. GameReplays : Army of the Dead or Balrog?

15. GameReplays : What do you like (or dislike?) most about the BfME community?

I like most that all players know each other and the fun we make on whatsapp, discord etc. I dislike most that the community is so small. This seems contradictive however, because if the community were much bigger I probably would not know everybody xd

16. GameReplays : What games are you active on currently, and how do your experiences there compare to those from BFME?

I donít play any other games actively apart from BFME at the moment

17. GameReplays : How many hours a day do you spend playing games?

Way too many hours lost. Letís not go into this too deep.

18. GameReplays : How has gaming affected your life?

Well gaming is just an activity to fill time. Actually at the moment I live like a parasite on state money, studying partying and doing whatever the f*** I want when I want it. I party, drink make fun and game too much. But hey, after finishing my study and starting to work full-time again I hope to make up for my sinful ways

19. GameReplays : How high is the influence of micro skills to win a game in 1v1 and 2v2?

Obviously it is very high. Micro is an important tool to achieve your intended strategy. It is however not the most important part. The main strategy and macro of units are more important in general. When it comes to the large fights micro is very important.

20. GameReplays : When you're not gaming or posting on Gamereplays, what do you do in your everyday life?

Study, party, hang with friends, enjoy life.

21. GameReplays : Where do you see yourself in 5 Years from now?

Working unfortunately, unless I win the lottery.

22. GameReplays : If you could give one tip of advice to others like you, what would it be?

Even when you go through shit, there is always light at the end of the tunnel my friends.

23. GameReplays : If you want to meet a bfme player in real life who would be that player? why?

I would love a meet up with all BFME players (the good ones at least). Would be amazing to meet all (good) players. We would game together, drink beer, go out and fix girls!

24. GameReplays :Who do you think is best bfme player right now?

Best BFME player is Stiwie I guess. He is active again and Iíve seen this guy do amazing stuff in impossible situation. He even manages to carry impossible games and players. However, Orange, Dune and Alan are amazing players too.

25. GameReplays : And who will be best bfme player?

Omran, definitely Omran

26. GameReplays :QM , CW OR FFG?

Quickmatch with the old system!!!!!

27. GameReplays : If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future?

Naah seems both shit. I would stay here and sell it maybe.

28. GameReplays : QM history?

Isengard uberhost B3t3rw3l. Ďlamest uberhost Isengard pickerí. RANK 9

29. GameReplays : If you could star in a movie, what genre would it be and what role would you play?

Action, like Jason Statham. Pretty easy watch and straight forward. So funny.

30. GameReplays : If you could only have one meal (including drink) for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Beer + Pizza?

31. GameReplays : What you think of what Alan is doing for bfme ( Tourney Cash prizes ) ?

I think it is amazing what Alan is doing for the BFME community. He not only streams good games to watch, but also puts a lot of effort into organising events that are raising BFME activity. For this I want to thank him, and whenever I will support him!

With that we have come to the end of this edition of Spotlight. If you'd like a particular player to be featured in this series or if you have any comments regarding this interview do post it below. Till next time!
