Spotlight with IlPrincipino

By CENTAUER - 24th April 2018 - 19:52 PM

Once again, GameReplays.Org brings to you another edition of our Spotlight interview series with one of the veterans and an Expert of Battle For Middle Earth (BFME). Centauer's guest for today's segment is former Staff and a well known long-time player, IlPrincipino.

1. GameReplays : Hello , thanks for doing this week's Spotlight. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Erik, Iím 24 years old and live in Stockholm, Sweden. Right now I am studying statistics at Stockholm University.

2. GameReplays : Tell us a bit about your online gaming history?

The first multiplayer game I played was in fact BfME. Iíve played it since the game came out back in 2004/2005, but I didnít play online until 2007/2008 I believe. I also played a bit of BfME 2 and RotWK and I was pretty decent, but I havenít played those since the server shutdown. Other games Iíve played are Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black ops.

3. GameReplays : Why did you join GR?

I discovered this site in early 2010 and was fascinated that you could share replays and watch pros play without actually observing in-game. So I joined GR to be able to upload my own replays, download and watch others replays, read in the strategy section and be part of the BfME community.

4. GameReplays : What is your favorite game?

BfME because I grew up with it and have online friends in this community

5. GameReplays : What is your favorite game genre? Why?

I guess RTS games since BfME is in this genre. But I also like certain RPG games if it has a good story, thrilling gameplay and nice graphics, like the Uncharted series on PS3/PS4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is one of my favourite games besides BfME.

6. GameReplays : So, how did you first get started with BFME?

My brother, who is 2 years older than me, got BfME for Christmas in 2004. I used to watch him play the campaign and got interested in it myself. Both of us were big fans of the movies even though I was only around 9-10 years old at the time. I remember watching Return of the King in the cinema and crying at the end when Samwise closed the door to Bag End together with the peaceful, yet somewhat sad music. Anyway, my brother got tired of BfME quite fast, so I started playing it instead.

7. GameReplays : What do you like so much about BfME, that has kept you playing the game for years?

First of all I liked the setting since Iím a fan of LotR in general. I also discovered that I liked the RTS genre when playing and learning the game. But the most important factor is probably that I got online friends in this community; I donít play with ĒrandomsĒ like I did in CoD. I did plan to stop playing after the server shutdown, but due some things in RL that didnít work out as I wanted BfME was still there, available for me to play. But I gotta admit Iíve gotten sick and tired of this game after playing it so much and the only reason Iím still here is because my mates are still being active for upcoming 2vs2 tourney.

8. GameReplays : What is your favorite army and Match-up?

In 1vs1 on FoI: Favourite army is Isengard, and match-up is Isengard mirror and (believe it or not) Gondor Mirror (if no SW). In 2vs2 on Anorien: Army is probably Rohan and match-up is GI mirror. I like mirrors in general because I usually know how to put myself/my team ahead of the opponent

9. GameReplays : What is your favorite map, and who is your best Team game partner?

Wold and I guess Orange (Earendil)

10. GameReplays : What would you do to change or improve game?

Remove certain bugs like the AC-bug and make the game less laggy so you are able to have clean games more often. Also, if possible, I would bring the old QM system back, like in the old days

11. GameReplays : During your time in the community and the game, did you played many games vs old players / pros . Tell us about that time who was the best in your opinion , which game were OP , or some of the nicknames of old players which you remember ?

When playing online, I first started with 3vs3 and 4vs4. I played with many players and at that time I didnít know which ones were the best, but to mention a few I played with: RimbaudLeGrand, ZOMBIE_ZOMBIE, jviilk, GGforMe, forshire, J2C2KL, ReiCasca, OneMorePlayer, HayabusaRider, Valsadoom, Xbitit, TnTkillolum, PadSistema4323, RyanLane07, Ryze22, PureAnarchy, _attacktroll_32. Some of my first real teammates were Laudatio, md10123 (IhateIsen), KotaruFuma, compatriots [GB72]KingPeter and A|Devilmaycry. I became good in 1v1 and 2v2 in 2010 when I started playing QM and discovered players like Orange, Xehanort, iHa^Snow (chyna), AquaCity (Sammy), sueffkopp, Valor, Light, Arkurios, Scop, Stiwie. I know there are other players I would like to mention, but unfortunately I donít remember their nicknames . Iíve never played with the likes of Buttafly, Gerrard, Maia etc. Maybe with Jnrd and Miho in QM once, but Iím not sure

12. GameReplays : How did you improve like you did to be Expert : Do you watch replays of your own games to see mistakes and avoid them the next time? What role does advice from other players play for you? Which competition improved your game the most: Quickmatch, Clanwars, Tournaments or For Fun Games?

I became good at this game simply by playing much with all armies and different players. I also read strategies on GR, but with enough experience I could trust my instincts and discover what strategy works best etc. and not just blindly copying a strategy and hoping it works. Quickmatch has definately helped me to improve, but FFG has as well.

13. GameReplays : CW history?

I actually started the clan ĒGiSĒ together with biHatch (Anon) and GIANLUCAPELU^ in 2008. The letters stand for our countries Germany, Italy and Sweden. At this time we werenít aware of clanwars.cc so we just played ffg, mostly 3v3. I didnít play real cw games until 2011. Iíve mostly played in ]DA| as ]DA|Tonks

14. GameReplays : QM history?

I might have played QM in 2009, but it was in 2010 I became decent in 1v1 and 2v2. I believe the highest ranking I reached was 4 in the 2vs2 ladder. In 1vs1 I think I was in top 20 at some point. Iím not sure what itís called, but the ranking symbol I reached in the 1-10 scale that is shown in the chat was 7. I always played as random, but Isengard was the army I was most successful with.

15. GameReplays : Playing against a Forces of Darkness or Forces of Light opponent?

16. GameReplays : Killing a high ranked Gandalf the White, or wiping out an entire castle with a Balrog?

Killing a high ranked GtW

17. GameReplays : Army of the Dead or Balrog?

18. GameReplays : What do you like (or dislike?) most about the BfME community?

I like that players are still putting an effort to keep this game active. But in a way I hate it too

19. GameReplays : What games are you active on currently, and how do your experiences there compare to those from BFME?

If I play games these days itís only BfME

20. GameReplays : How many hours a day do you spend playing games?

A couple of years ago I could play several hours, but now I play less than an hour, if I play at all.

21. GameReplays : How has gaming affected your life?

Positive things: I was in an English-speaking environment so my vocabulary got better; Iíve had fun and got some good memories; Iíve met online-friends. Negative things: Required time and concentration when I should have been doing other things; Unhealthy

22. GameReplays : How high is the influence of micro skills to win a game in 1v1 and 2v2?

Micro is just a tool in order for you to win. Of course itís important, with none or bad micro you wonít win games. Same goes for macro. But to be successful in any format you need to gather enough experience to know every scenario that is likely to happen. So when you start a game, whether itís 1vs1 or 2vs2, you should identify your most likely way of winning depending on map and match-up. You could interpret that as what strategy to use, but I see it more as of how you play in order to put yourself in a position to win and close the game. Some examples: Always try to use rain aggressively; donít base-rush at the cost of losing map control unless you are certain you will be able to destroy key-buildings; donít use heal on horses fighting for mc in FoL mirror when you have more important units/heroes. And lastly, capitalizing on your opponents mistakes/passiveness/non-awareness will win you games

23. GameReplays : When you're not gaming or posting on Gamereplays, what do you do in your everyday life?

Iím studying, playing French Horn, playing tennis, meeting friends etc.

24. GameReplays : Where do you see yourself in 5 Years from now?

Iím not sure, but hopefully happy.

25. GameReplays : If you could give one tip of advice to others like you, what would it be?

Gather experience, donít blindly follow strategies when you donít know why you do that etc.

26. GameReplays : If you want to meet a bfme player in real life who would be that player? why?

I guess Orange since Iíve played most games with him

29. GameReplays : Who do you think is best bfme player right now?

Not sure, Alan or Dunedain maybe. But seeing how old and inactive this game is and the fact that the gameplay and the strategies hasnít changed in 9-10 years (correct me if Iím wrong) anyone can play good these days. An expert badge doesnít mean a lot when all strategies already exists and the real competition is gone imo.

30. GameReplays : And who will be best bfme player?

Definately Mergin

31. GameReplays : QM , CW OR FFG?

QM because you play other maps than Anorien and FoI.

32. GameReplays : If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future?

A BfME-related answer: Go back in time in order to play QM and CW when activity was at top.

We therefore come to the end of this edition of Spotlight! Stay tuned as we interview more players from the BFME scene in the future. As always, if you would like any particular players to be interviewed, or if you have any thoughts on this interview, do comment below!
