Spotlight with RP0

By Earendil - 16th May 2018 - 07:25 AM

GameReplays.Org returns with another edition of our Spotlight interview series with one of the veterans and an Expert of Battle For Middle Earth (BFME). Centauer's guest this time round is well known long-time player, RPO.

1. GameReplays : Hello , thanks for doing this week's Spotlight. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Idlir. I am 27 and at the moment I am a low level public servant in the Republic of Albania. I have a background in philosophy, education, science and sports (mosty tennis, football and basketball). For a while I played semi competitive tennis, then at some point I realize that besides not being good enough to commit full time to it, I also didnít have a nag for practicing or doing the hard work behind the scenes, so I ditched tennis in favor of focusing on the academic side of things.

2. GameReplays : Tell us a bit about your online gaming history?

There is not much to tell really, as my online gaming history is highly uneventful. Tbh, BFME has been the highlight of my online gaming history. I can't mention any other games I have played online even for more than a few hours let alone for as long as I have played BFME. Plus, I have mostly been a sports guy and generally have never had much interest in electronic games.

3. GameReplays : Why did you join GR?

Its funny and a bit embarrassing to admit that I came upon Gamereplays after I was introduced to Gameranger. Now before anyone bashes or flames me for this admission, let me point out that I discovered gameranger very late in my bfme life so to speak. I donít even remember when. One of my friends with which I had played BFME over LAN for years had finally made this incredible discovery that one could actually play BFME online through gameranger. So unfortunately I didnít even catch the TRUE amazing EA quick match days, not because I wasnít playing bfme those days (Believe me during my high school years (especially the first two) me and my buddies would play almost every day after school. We even got competitive 4v4 games over LAN believe it or not). This was in 2006-2008.

As to why I joined GamereplaysÖI think there was this tourney that was being advertised in Gameranger that had the gamereplays link in the description. That got me curious and couldnít resist checking the site how. Then the rest is history. Also the fact that one can share replays and as a result increase the improvement rate is pretty great.

4. GameReplays : What is your favorite game?

I only ever really played one game consistently (BFME) so its pretty obvious that my favorite online game is Fifa 2015 (bad joke)

5. GameReplays : What is your favorite game genre? Why?

Where does BFME belong?

6. GameReplays : So, how did you first get started with BFME?

I mentioned this when answering question nr.3, but to go into a bit more detail Ė If my memory serves me right it all happened in the annals of an after-school rainy November day. We had just started high school that year and that particular day had been incredibly boring. As we were walking home while joking around about stupid stuff out of nowhere(as often happens in Tirana it starts pouring (raining heavily).

We had no umbrellas so we had to take cover even though we were not very far from our homes. Ironically, the rain had started as we were just passing a pc gaming hub so we felt like it had been fate giving us a push to go play a casual game, have some fun and melt the stress accumulated throughout the day. Guess which game we decided to play? Bfme has been a part of my life since November 2006 (with some long breaks in between)

7. GameReplays : What do you like so much about BfME, that has kept you playing the game for years?

I love the book (LOTR), the original movie(triology), love the characters, love the incredible story-arch. This amazing gem of a strategy game that was born in 2004 is just the icing on a cake. Its impossible to point to just one reason that dominates all others. I just cant say a bad thing about it, maybe except for the fact that sometimes it robs me of a bit more time than I have at my disposal for it.

8. GameReplays : What is your favorite army and Match-up?

My favorite army is roh. Back in the day when I was only playing on LAN with my buddies I was known as the roh specialist and the guy whos ara got to level 10 almost every game I was roh tongue.gif

Favorite match-up for 2v2 is gon mor vs roh isen. Its such a balanced match up, the only true balanced match up imo. All factions are involved. There is so many strats to choose from and it is so mental. I also enjoy playin mor roh vs gon roh because its so hard for the mor roh, but you get such a great feeling when you win as the mor roh that makes the mu so interesting.

9. GameReplays : What is your favorite map, and who is your best Team game partner?

This might come as a surprise, but I really enjoy playing Harlond 

As far as best team game partner: I will never forget playing countells random 2v2 games with my buddy Anon, on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings. We have never really been a very good team though and he will attest to that tongue.gif I think from the players currently active, the player that I think best complements my skills is Ilprincipino.

10. GameReplays : What would you do to change or improve game?

There are some annoying bugs and lag can be a real pain some times, and in general every game has technical issues that can always be fixed and improved, but the biggest issue is activity imo. In order to make the investment of time and resources in the improvement of BFME worth it, the game should have atleast a respectably sized active community which im afraid it doesnít have at the moment.

11. GameReplays : Playing against a Forces of Darkness or Forces of Light opponent?

12. GameReplays : Killing a high ranked Gandalf the White, or wiping out an entire castle with a Balrog?
Wiping entire castle!

13. GameReplays : Army of the Dead or Balrog?

14. GameReplays : What do you like (or dislike?) most about the BfME community?

I dislike the fact that some players take losing too personal.

15. GameReplays : What games are you active on currently, and how do your experiences there compare to those from BFME?

Only BFME. No time for anything else.

16. GameReplays : How many hours a day do you spend playing games?

IDK it depends. Usually mostly during the weekends

17. GameReplays : How has gaming affected your life?

Positive things: I was in an English-speaking environment so my vocabulary got better; Iíve had fun and got some good memories; Iíve met online-friends. Negative things: Required time and concentration when I should have been doing other things; Unhealthy

18. GameReplays : How high is the influence of micro skills to win a game in 1v1 and 2v2?

I believe BFME is a micro oriented game in general and luckily micro is the skill the takes lest time to improve. However, all the decision making is part of the macro and u can have incredible, otherworldly micro, but if your decision making (macro) is off by a little, you wont have much success vs good/pro players and you wont go far in your bfme career.

19. GameReplays : When you're not gaming or posting on Gamereplays, what do you do in your everyday life?

Work, Read, Watch sports, write, walk, travel.

20. GameReplays : Where do you see yourself in 5 Years from now?

Living in Vienna

21. GameReplays : If you could give one tip of advice to others like you, what would it be?

Quick tip for micro improvement: Assign hotkeys/shortcuts to units/heroes(ctrl +nr). I would advise to start with just 2-3 hotkeys initially until u can comfortably micro using those hotkeys. Believe me it makes a huge difference, at least for me it did.
Other than that: Have fun, relax, enjoy the game and please never purposefully try to hurt, bully or belittle another fellow player.

22. GameReplays : If you want to meet a bfme player in real life who would be that player? why?

Anon, Orange, Sam, Ilprincipino, Mergin, Ganjaman, Dunedain. I apologize if I forgot somebody.

23. GameReplays : Who do you think is best bfme player right now?

Orange is the current best all around player in 1v1 and 2v2 and seeing as he currently leads both 1v1 and 2v2ladders I donít think thatís up for debate. I donít think he has the best micro tho.

24. GameReplays : And who will be best bfme player?

One of Mergins kids probably, but he refuses to introduce/teach them BFME 

25. GameReplays : QM , CW OR FFG?

26. GameReplays : If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future?

Go back and give quick match a try, even if just for one day (24 hour marathon)

With that, we have reached the end of this edition of Spotlight! Stay tuned as we interview more players from the BFME scene in the future. As always, if you would like any particular players to be interviewed, or if you have any thoughts on this interview, do comment below!
