Rohan vs Mordor Master Guide

By Wayward Son - 8th September 2010 - 18:18 PM

Rohan verse Mordor is unanimously considered the easiest matchup for Rohan, and by far the hardest match-up for Mordor. This matchup essentially comes down to effective early rohirrim usage, and ultimately effective rohirrim archer usage. Sometimes this match-up can be decided during early game by an efficient peasant spam to cripple Mordor's economy, and other times fully upgraded rohirrim manage to raid the Mordor base before troll presence, allowing them to brutalize the castle. Other games will come down to an intense late game confrontation, including a vast amount of Rohan's units; including combos, rohirrim, rohirrim archers, elves, and heroes.

At times, the Rohan player is forced into an uncomfortable situation by Mordor. The intention of this guide is to provide you with the knowledge necessary to identify these situations, be aware of what causes them, and more importantly explain how to get out of it, setting Rohan up with a smooth victory over Mordor.

Power Point Progression

Rohan has a variety of useful powers in its arsenal against Mordor, and nearly every power can be useful at some stage in the game. To set one particular power point path as being the best one is fairly difficult, the only obvious one is draft first. From here elf summon can be useful to help you pick off trolls, but with a rohirrim archer based strategy this shouldn't be an issue. Therefore, Draft to Heal is the most appropriate path. Because one of Mordor's most useful powers is tainted land due to it's ability to suddenly cancel leadership, Elven Wood following Heal is generally the best option. Following Elven Wood, Anduril is advisable in order to open a path to Cloudbreak as well as to transform Aragorn into a fighting force on the map. If Aragorn is not in the picture, then Elven Summon may be the better buy. Then Cloud Break, which greatly increases Rohan's chances in prevailing against enemy combos. Then finally Army of the Dead, which will typically be the game finisher if the game makes it into the late stages. Below is a description of each power relative to its use in this matchup.

The suggested build order:
Draft > Heal > Elf Wood > Anduril > Cloudbreak > AoD

Draft is the staple power in any match-up. Without it your peasants are useless, therefore your early game may cost you the game.

Heal is among the most useful powers in the game. Its ability to instantly heal every unit in it's radius, while also reviving one dead unit of each battalion. It can instantly turn the tide of a game by either healing a nearly dead hero, or a weakened battalion.

Elven Wood can be considered a staple in this match-up. Mordor's ability to buy early land can prevent you from having a proper place to attack with late game archers, due to its ability to cancel leadership. Elven Wood counters Mordor's Tainted Land, while providing bonus armor for Rohan's combos. Enabling them to prevail in situations that would otherwise lead to their death.

Anduril used to be a remarkably important power in this match-up when Aragorn rush was predominant. This power makes Aragorn a tank unit, capable of fighting off trolls while providing leadership. It also allows you to buy Cloud Break.

Elven Summon is generally a very useful power. However it is mostly not needed in this match-up. The elves can be helpful to have a sudden way to kill a weak Nazgul, as well as to flank trolls.

Ents are fairly useless in this matchup. While they can be used to fight trolls that lack leadership and trample combos for a brief period of time, they are essentially clumsy and a weak counter compared to Cloud Break.

Cloud Break is another useful and sometimes necessary power. It greatly reduces enemy unit's armor and damage for a decent deal of time. This can turn the tide of battle, especially while engaging in archer verse archer fights.

One would have to assume that Army of the Dead requires no real explanation. This power can be used defensively to counter Mordor's Balrog, or aggressively to dominate an enemy army, allowing you to walk into his defenseless base.
