Spotlight with Fishy

By CENTAUER - 13th November 2016 - 19:58 PM

GameReplays.Org is proud to present a new Spotlight with one of the veterans of Battle For Middle Earth (BFME), and a well known long-time BFME staff member (Senior Replay Reviewer) who has done a great job for the community, Fishy!

GameReplays: Hello Fishy, thanks for doing this weeks Spotlight. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Fishy: Hi! I am 26 years old, I am from Czech Republic (small country in the middle of a Europe) and live in its 2nd biggest city Brno, currently studying law on Masaryk University.

GameReplays: Tell us a bit about your online gaming history?

Fishy: My first online game I played regularly was CS:Source shortly after BFME came. Currently I am playing mostly war games with machines from WW2.

GameReplays: Why did you join GR ?

Fishy: Back when I didnt even played online I was playing against my friend and because I was losing way too often I decided to find some advices and strategies, I tried the common strategies from Strategy section and it worked liked a charm and I was able to win in a landslide.

As I was reading this forum I found amusing community and begin to dig more deeper into the game as I fell in love with this BFME.

GameReplays: What is your favorite game?

Fishy: BFME has sweet spot in my heart due to its uniqueness and my love for world of Middle-Earth. But game (sic) I'll always remember is first Mafia and Hidden and Dangerous 2.

GameReplays: What is your favorite game genre? Why?

Fishy: I like RTS but except for BFME I dont like multiplayer - so RTS single player only - games like AoE2, Age of Mythology, Warcraft 3 are gems. Since World of Tanks came out my favourite genre was war games like these - World of Tanks (18k games in that), War Thunder and World of Warships. When I am tired from online gaming I let off steam with Skyrim.

GameReplays: So, how did you first get started with BFME?

Fishy: First I played it back in 2005 when I borrowed the game from my friend. I loved the FoL singleplayer but since it wasnt my game I didnt try playing it online. I returned the game after few weeks and found it again in 2009 when one of my friend (he goes as Kitelon on GameRanger) who also love the Tolkien universum talked me to try playing it online against him.

GameReplays: What do you like so much about BfME, that has kept you playing the game for years?

Fishy: Honestly I fell in luck with its unique system. Fixed settlement spots, units healing and leveling, the fact that for a win you need to combine units - heroes - spells and all are important. Also how it incorporates the movies (its briliantly done) into the game. Everything has its link to the movies and none of that looks forced to me tbh. And also the pace of the game suits me too. I didnt find such perfect combination in any other RTS game yet.

GameReplays: What is one funny moment you can recall ?

Fishy: One moment? Heh I can remember dozens of them. For example - I remember the final between StiWie and Felixanius - it was IvG on FoI and I remember how both of the starting soldiers battalion survived with just one almost dead soldier - he healed them and was able to bite StiWie back with them. Awesome. Awesome to the max.

GameReplays: What is your favorite army and match-up?

Fishy: I like Mordor a lot and also Rohan. But overall I like them all the same - depends on MU mostly.

My most favourite MUs are:

GvR, MvG, RvI, RvR, IvI, IvM and GvI on FoI ofc.

Surprisingly my most hated MU is RvM - me as Rohan. I somehow manage to screw up almost in every game.
GameReplays -What is your favorite map, and who is your best Team game partner?

From 1v1 maps it would be FoI, Westfold and Fangorn
From 2v2 maps its Anorien, Wold and Osghiliath ofc.

I like to play most with Felix, Dune, Orange, Ryan and StiWie

GameReplays: What has been your best match (or moment) in BfME and what in it?

Fishy: Well it has to be this match vs Luna:

It was CW FoI game with me as Gondor surving endless presure by Rohan and it was really long and action pumped and I felt like I did my best when we finished. Also I cant forget my only 1v1 win as Mordor against StiWie as Rohan on FoI tongue.gif but it was fun only match so who cares :-)

GameReplays: What would you do to change or improve game?

Fishy: If there was anything possible to deal with the command lag and commands disappearing it would be awesome. Also some better replay viewing function would be good too. What I would really appreciate is an online in-game ladder system with working QM.

GameReplays: Playing against a Forces of Darkness or Forces of Light opponent?

Fishy: FoD.

GameReplays: Killing a high ranked Gandalf the White, or wiping out an entire castle with a Balrog?

Fishy: Wiping out an entire FoD castle > Killing high ranked GtW (there is something very satisfying about wiping his smug face with the whip > Wiping out an entire FoL castle.

GameReplays: Army of the Dead or Balrog?

Fishy: AoD is better but nothing compares to use Balrog on an entire Rohan army in 1v1.

GameReplays: What is your Clanwars history?

Fishy: I began to play CW back in 2012 after the ladder ended and people resurected CW. Shortly after I became league admin on the CW site and I still am the only somewhat activ admin there.

GameReplays: What do you like (or dislike?) most about the BfME community?

Fishy: It always depends on the people you hang with. Some are simply awesome, some are difficult to cooperate and some are just plain stupid or buttholes in general. Man have to pick with who he hangs out or play for fun games. But I will play vs anyone if it comes for competitive game.

GameReplays: What games are you active on currently, and how do your experiences there compare to those from BFME?

Fishy: I am playing World of Warships, War Thunder, World of Tanks and BMFE sometimes. They are all arcade-ish (some are more realistic some are not) games focused about war machines from around WW2 period. The biggest different for me its not as time dependant as BFME.

A game take usually from 5-15 minutes and if I have to go or the game make anrgy I can simply stop. But when I am about to play a BFME game I know I need an hour to be sure I have enough time to finish the game (not that all games takes an hour but having to cancel great game and all the effort you did to beat him is just demotivating). Also all these games have some sort of progression and online ladder.

GameReplays: What are some characteristics that you think help make up a great RTS player?

Fishy: Quick decisions, map awarenesess, tactical mind and game knowledge.

GameReplays: How many hours a day do you spend playing games?

Fishy: It really depends on many circumstations now. I used to have basically most of the late afternoons and nights free so I spended maybe 5 hours a day playing games.

Now due to work, school and the fact that me and my girlfriend are living together its much less. But when everything goes right and I have no duties I have no problem spending half a day playing a games as its really relaxing. Sadly these days doesnt come often.

GameReplays: How has gaming affected your life?

Fishy: Quite a lot because of the time I spend with them but I dont find many negatives appart from the time I "wasted" on them. I am still a normal social person that hangs out with real friends, go outside, go to work etc. Not some basement dweller sitting infront of PC all day long

But I must say that at least half of my real world (people I am meeting also in real life fyi) friends I met playing games online and all are great guys so thats a big positive!

GameReplays: When you're not gaming or posting on gamereplays, what do you do in your every day life?

Fishy: I spend a lot time in work, hanging out with GF or friends (beer yay!) or as most of you know my passion is catching fishes. Last 10 years I am specializing in a fish called Carp due to which I am able to spend many days in the wilderness no matter the weather or seazon.

GameReplays: Where do you see yourself in 5 Years from now?

Fishy: Hopefully working some better job and with diploma from university, living in something bigger with my GF and maybe having a child already.

GameReplays: If you could give one tip of advice to others like you, what would it be?

Fishy: Study the strategies and watch the best players play and try to understand why they do things the way they do. Thats the best and fastest way to become really good in BFME.

GameReplays: If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or visit the future?

Fishy: I would go back in time to make a copy of every book in Alexandria Library and hide it somewhere.

GameReplays: Anything you'd like to add?

Fishy:Laser towers, onhost Rohan laming and unnecessary cata spam are cancer!

And with that we come to the end of this session of Spotlight. Do give us your thoughts on the interview and tell us who you would like to see to be interviewed next from the BFME community below!
