Countering Heroes

By MasterOfPhate - 2nd April 2010 - 14:33 PM

Do pesky heroes get you down? Do you have trouble killing them while they wreak havoc on your forces? If so, this guide will provide some general solutions. The first step to defeating a hero is to understand their weaknesses, which ultimately comes down to their armor types. Please note the following values are for the BT2:DC Patch 2.5. However, several differences between the 1.06 patch will be noted in this guide. Keep in mind that armor is not the only factor that is in play when fighting a hero; their health, abilities, and speed also come into play, not to mention any supporting units or powers. In addition, many units have scalars to their stats (modifying the base values) so there are always a few exceptions, like the Witch-king and Nazgul being immune to poison. This guide will not cover flying heroes since they are self-explanatory. The last thing to keep in mind is just because the percentage of damage a hero takes from a certain damage type may seem low does not mean that you should not use that unit against it if you have to. It could be good decision to use that unit anyways to stall for time, block it from reaching a building, or to simply kill it faster.

Hero Armor

(f) = foot
(m) = mounted

Normal Hero Armor

Boromir, Theoden (f), Gandalf (f), Gloin, Glorfindel (f), Lurtz, Sharku, Nazgul (f), Gorkil (f)

Damage from:

Hero Ranged: 50%
Hero: 50%
Structural 50%
Slash: 40%
Poison: 40%
Cavalry: 30%
Flame: 25%
Magic: 20%
Pierce: 18%
Specialist/Pike: 15%

These heroes are exceptionally weak to slash damage, so send your swordsmen to carve them up. They also take high damage from ranged heroes, but that is not very useful. The rest of their armor is average for a hero. Your typical swordsman unit should do the job just fine.

Light Hero Armor

Eomer (f), Faramir (f), Arwen (f), Legolas, Wormtongue, Mouth of Sauron (f)

Damage From:

Hero: 75%
Magic: 63%
Cavalry: 60%
Hero Ranged: 50%
Structural: 50%
Pierce: 30%
Slash: 25%
Specialist/Pike: 10%
Flame: 10%

Like Regular Hero Armor, Light Hero Armor is fairly average all around. They are very weak against other heroes, however, so if you have a good damage-dealing hero put them to work. Their magic weakness is not very useful unless you are Elves. Cavalry should never be used to directly attack a hero unless they are upgraded and you have multiple battalions, or if the hero is fleeing. Even then, be careful, your cavalry should be out harassing or trampling units, not fighting heroes. Just use your standard swordsmen and archer units, which you should have in abundance.

Tough Hero Armor

Eowyn (f), Aragorn, Gimli, Haldir, Elrond, Saruman, Witchking (f), Shelob

Damage From:

Poison: 75%
Hero: 65%
Specialist/Pike: 42%
Structural: 40%
Slash: 25%
Cavalry: 25%
Cavalry Ranged: 20%
Pierce: 15%

All you need against heroes with Tough Hero Armor is a few pike battalions and you are ready to go. Poison may be good, but you will need a fair amount of Goblin Warriors to defeat any hero, even when alone.

Resilient Hero Armor

Mouth of Sauron (m), Gandalf (m), Dain, Thranduil

Damage From:

Poison: 60%
Hero: 60%
Specialist/Pike: 55%
Structural: 50%
Slash: 25%
Cavalry: 25%
Cavalry Ranged: 20%
Pierce: 17%

1.06 Armor Changes
In the patch 1.06, Dain and Thranduil used to have Mounted Hero Armor, while Gandalf (m), and Mouth of Sauron (m) used to have Tough Hero Armor.

Heroes with Resilient Armor are just a weaker version of Tough Heroes. Pikes are your best weapon against them.

Mounted Hero Armor

Eomer (m), Eowyn (m), Faramir (m), Arwen (m), Glorfindel (m), Nazgul (m), Gorkil (m)

Damage From:

Specialist/Pike: 100%
Structural: 100%
Hero: 50%
Magic: 50%
Poison: 50%
Flame: 40%
Hero Ranged: 30%
Cavalry: 25%
Slash: 25%
Cavalry Ranged: 20%
Pierce: 15%

Heroes with Mounted Armor will die extremely fast to pikes, and most cannot survive running straight through a battalion. They are also weak to structural fire and upgraded arrows.
