Forward Archery Range/Barracks Tip of the Week

By Xenith - 10th October 2009 - 03:32 AM

The Foward Archery Range/Barracks strategy is a flexible, economically-oriented strategy. It is well complemented by the incredible buildtime of Gondor Archers, and allows you to get a hefty resource boost/experience bonus from mass early creeping.

Power Points

Rally Call complements your first archer's ability to creep very nicely, but it's not really necessary. If you're facing random or a faction with a debuff, Elven Wood is, as always, a good choice.

Build Order

Option 1: Farm + Farm -> Farm + Forward Range -> Forward Barracks

Option 2: Farm -> Forward Range -> Farm -> Forward Barracks

The first choice supplements your already impressive creep cash with a steady economy from a three Farm start. Build your forward Archery Range at the middle creep and your forward Barracks at the side creep. You can always build them in a different spot if you want, it doesn't really matter (save for certain situations, more on this later). As soon as you get your first two archers, use Rallying Call on them and creep the Warg lair using a Builder, Elven style. With option one, you can go for either a fast third archer or a fourth Farm and still have enough money for a Tower Guard as soon as your Barracks is finished. A third archer is usually preferable. Option two won't allow for as large of a force, but it will provide an earlier Tower Guard in case of cavalry, and also faster creeping. This is the only real difference between the two build orders.

Strategies

Mass Creep/Defend:

This strategy is economically oriented, so option one will complement this choice well. Use a Tower Guard/Gondor Archer combination to creep a Troll lair and continue to spam archers/Tower Guards to grab all the creeps and defend. Try to go for the second side Warg before your second Troll. This will give you a chance to creep-steal if your opponent is also trying to creep.

Fast Rush:

This start aims for a quick production building/base resource building take-down by getting a very fast unit mix. Use start one to quickly get a Tower Guard and two archers, and creep your side and middle Warg lair. Follow up with a Soldier of Gondor and go for their main base. You should be able to take down at least two buildings and a fair number of troops, and in the meantime, you can either spam farms or more Soldiers of Gondor to harass.

Delayed Rush:

This strategy is meant to work with option two. It gives you a powerful army with the idea of completely overwhelming enemy defenses. Use a Tower Guard and a Gondor Archer to creep your opponent's Troll lair, and archers (make sure to include your rank two archer) to creep his middle lair, if possible. Build a second Tower Guard while spamming archers and then switch to a hard Soldier of Gondor spam. After your creeping is finished, rush his main base with your two Tower Guards and most/all of your archers, spreading out your Soldiers of Gondor to harass his outlying resource buildings.

Match Ups

Against Men of the West:

Any of the strategies can be effective in this match up. A cavalry rush can take out your starting archers, but not until after you have creeped, at which point it won't matter very much because Knights are such pathetic harassers. Just continue to creep, and smash his economy (or base if you can get to it) with Tower Guard/Soldiers of Gondor combinations. Try to get either Eomer, Faramir, or Rohirrim out early.

Against Dwarves:

I don't recommend a delayed rush here, for taking out their Hall of Warriors and base Mines won't be worth the damage you'll receive from a Guardian spam from forward Mines. Do not leave your base unprotected, for it will be very vulnerable to a fast take-down.

Against Elves:

A fast rush here is dangerous, as three archers isn't enough to compete with sniping Lorien Archers. However, mass Gondor Archers absolutely destroy Elves, so a delayed rush can be very effective. note that in this particular match up, you should build your forward Archery Range at your Troll lair, instead of one of your Wargs, so you won't be creepstolen and/or camped out. Overall, no matter the tactic, this is definitely this build order's strongest match up. It absolutely destroys a standard Elven start.

Against Mordor/Goblins:

Fast rushing can work occasionally in these match ups, but the other two strategies are more reliable. Archers are perfect against spam, just be careful not to get overwhelmed and pushed completely on to the defensive. Taking out their production buildings will be very important, so don't lose your starting Tower Guards uselessly.

Against Isengard:

This is the trickiest match up for this strategy, and arguably Men in general. A Warg rush can prove very effective, as they can both kill your starting archers and destroy your buildings with ease. Also, four Furnace starts can compete even with your massive creep cash. It may be worth it to build your Barracks near your Archery Range and use option one, as this will allow you to get a mixed force before Wargs can arrive, even against a real Warg rush. After that, leave a Tower Guard to defend, creep his middle lair, and rush.
