Tip of the Week #64 - 'Shoot to kill' - A Damage Guide

Spending your resources wisely is the key to victory. When you are sending your bombers or stealth teams behind enemy lines, you want to be sure that your primary target ends up as a heap of rubble, but you also cannot afford to overkill your target. The following matrix shows how many popular strike units you need to take down your favorite enemy structure.

The column headers have the following meaning.
  • FHs: Firehawks (2 bombs each)
  • FHBs: Firehawk bombs (1500 grenade damage per bomb)
  • Orcas: Orcas (6 rockets each)
  • ORs: Orca rockets (750 rocket damage per rocket, 375 effective)
  • V'gos: Vertigo Bombers (1 bomb with 3000 cannon damage, 2250 effective)
  • Sh'ws: Shadow strikes (2000 grenade damage)
  • Fans: Fanatics (750 cannon damage, 562.5 effective)
(For completeness, though not used here: The Firehawk in anti-air configuration carries four missiles that deal 1000 rocket damage each.)

To give you the extra edge on micro superiority, the list also contains the number of individual warheads needed to take down a structure. After all, why waste half a Firehawk that could bomb something else instead? Beware, though, that if you deliver your damage slowly (like with Orcas or Fanatics) and the enemy starts repairing, you may well need a greater number of hits to finish off your target.

The second table lists the number of warheads required from certain units with infinite ammo.
  • Mis: GDI Missile Squad and Nod Militant Missile Squad missiles (250 rocket damage per missile, 125 effective, fired in volleys of 2)
  • PbM: Pitbull missiles (200 rocket damage, 100 effective, 400 rocket damage against air targets, fired in volleys of 2)
  • PC: Predator Tank cannon shells (400 cannon damage, 300 effective)
  • PR: Predator Tank railgun blast (572 cannon damage, 429 effective)
  • Jug: Juggernaut shell (1000 cannon damage, 750 effective, fired in volleys of 3)
  • Bike: Attack Bike missile (300 rocket damage, 150 effective, fired in volleys of 2)
  • SC: Scorpion Tank cannon shell (240 cannon damage, 180 effective)
  • SL: Scorpion Tank laser blast (520 cannon damage, 390 effective)
  • StT: Stealth Tank missile (375 rocket damage, 187.5 effective, fired in volleys of 10)
  • Ava: Avatar main laser blast (1250 cannon damage, 937.5 effective)

Notes

If your favorite building is missing from the list, you can figure the number out yourself: structures take 100% damage from grenade damage, but only 75% from cannon and 50% from rocket damage (with a few exceptions, like the GDI Barracks, Airfield and Tech Center). For other structures and units, if you know their armor resistances and their full health, you can deduce the required number of strikes - or just ask in our forums! Here are some values for popular units, though.

For most units such a simple table is not so useful: Infantry receives a extra armor (25% damage) when suppressed and armor penalty (150% damage) when force-moving while suppressed, and it is very susceptible to splash damage effects. Most vehicles have directional armor penalties for attacks from the flanks or the rear. By popular request, however, here is one special case.

Predators vs. Scorpions

  • Predator: 3400HP, 400/572 cannon damage (unupgraded/Railguns)
  • Scorpion: 2400HP, 240/520 cannon camage (unupgraded/Lasers)
Both tanks take 110% damage from the side and 150% damage from the rear, and have no armor (100%) against cannon damage. Therefore:
  • It takes 6 Predator shells in the front to destroy a Scorpion, or 4 in the rear; after upgrade it takes 5 or 3 railgun blasts, respectively.
  • It takes 15 (front) or 10 (rear) Scorpion shells to destroy a Predator; 7 (front) or 5 (rear) laser blasts after upgrade.
  • Predator vs. Predator: 9 (front) or 6 (rear) cannon shells; 6 (front) or 4 (rear) railgun blasts.
  • Scorpion vs. Scorpion: 10 (front) or 7 (rear) cannon shells; 5 (front) or 4 (rear) laser blasts.
Note that the Dozer Blades upgrade applies a global 75% damage scalar to Scorpion Tanks, i.e. they take only 75% cannon damage.
