Tip of the Week #54 - Harassment with Scrin

By _IaMThoR_ - 13th March 2009 - 23:37 PM

In Command and Conquer : Tiberium Wars harvester harassment may not be quite as effective or important as in the expansion, Kanes Wrath, but a successful attack on your opponents economy is certainly a good way to put you on the front foot through the game and will increase your chances of winning greatly.

This will focus on the individual factions methods of harassment and how to use them to the greatest advantage. This time it's for the Scrin.

Ah the Scrin. Probably in the middle of how much harassment options they have. More than GDI but less than Nod. They are also the only faction that has a defence building that can be summoned anywhere on the map from a support power!

This support power is of course the lightning spike power from the Nerve Center. It may seem to do suprisingly low damage at first, but in combination with some other units such as Seekers or Stormriders they can turn the tide of a small level skirmish in your favour. It has to be noted though that you need to be good in your placement of this as a smart enemy will just build around it, making it unable to fire at anything else other than there buildings(which it does low damage to).

The unit harassment options the Scrin has consists mainly of the Seeker tank and the stormrider aircraft. The Seeker is more heavily armoured than it's counterparts, the Attack Bike and the Pitbull, but it costs more in comparison. It deals the same amount of damage as the attack bike but instead of a quick two missle attack, it has to fire a much larger salvo to deal it's maxium damage. Using these in combination with the Lightning Spike mentioned above works wonders early game.

Just like fellow tier 2 aircraft, the Venom, the Stormrider does not need to reload. However Stormriders are restricted to four per airfield like its GDI counterpart the Orca. One or two Stormriders will do very little damage indeed, however in groups of four or more they are capable of doing quick amounts of damage and can take a fair deal of damage unlike the Venom or the Orca. These are also incredibly good late game in a Scrin vs Scrin match up as they can do more than harass, they also can easily take out PAC's, Devestator Warships and Tripods. Just be wary of a group of Gun Walkers or upgraded Shock Troopers as they will rip them to shreds(although 8 Stormriders will rip apart a few Gun Walkers equally as fast.) The best way of using these is to wait until you have 4-8 and then attack a tiberium field with little AA and kill a harvester or two until they react(don't forget they can soak up some damage so 2 or 3 rocket men should'nt scare you off.) at which point you should either retreat for repairs or find another spot to harass if they are not badly damaged.

Also Scrin has the luxury of having the only commando in the game that is worth training. This is the Mastermind.

The best way of using this unit is to sneak it into a undefended part of a base and capture either a MCV or a Tech Center. After you have captured their building you can do one of three things:
- Place a Storm Collum or Signal Transmitter(Mothership).
- Sell it straight away.
- Attempt to capture other buildings or ,if you captured a different faction MCV, try to build a crane at your own base.(this is very risky and not advised.)

On a final note you can use Devestator Warships to take out part of your opponents tiberium field from a great distance! Doing this will deny your enemy of vital resources.
