Tip of the Week #53 - Harassment with GDI

By _IaMThoR_ - 7th March 2009 - 02:20 AM

In Command and Conquer : Tiberium Wars harvester harassment may not be quite as effective or important as in the expansion, Kanes Wrath, but a successful attack on your opponents economy is certainly a good way to put you on the front foot through the game and will increase your chances of winning greatly.

This will focus on the individual factions methods of harassment and how to use them to the greatest advantage. This time it's for GDI.

In terms of tier 1 tanks and infantry GDI is some what lacking in any kind of "normal" harassment tactics used by Nod and Scrin, However, this does not mean that they are unable at harassment completely. Infact they have argueably one of the most effective early game harassment tactics currently in the game. I am of course talking able the infamous APC engineer tactic.

The basis of this tactic is quite simple ; build a APC and a engineer and load the engineer into the APC where you should attempt at capturing a building from your opponent.

Hotkeying(Ctrl + a number of your choice) the Engineer and the APC is very helpful as it allows you to quickly select the engineer and send it into the building you have chosen as soon as it gets out of the APC! This also allows you to quickly send it back into the safety of the APC if you opponent sells/unpacks(incase of the MCV) there building and aim for a different target.

Even though the APC engi tactic is probably the most effective harassment tactic GDI has it is not limited to that. It also has the Orca fighter at tier 2 which is built from the airfield.

To kill one harvester in one run of the Orca's missles you will need 3 of them and, given that you can only have a maxium of 4 Orcas per airfield, it is generally a good thing to attack different areas of your enemies tiberium to stop them simply placing a AA defence in the area you are going too and killing all of the Orcas.

Another early harassment unit and rarely seen in 1.09 are Pitbulls. These small scout units provide a decent harassment of your opponents harvesters. Using their speed to evade more powerful units, or any base defences placed by your opponent. When harassing with these units use their speed to scout your opponents base as well. Not only can Pitbulls be used on enemy harvesters they can also be used to target enemy power plants.

This next type of harassment unit requires you to have tech’ed to tier three. Juggernauts, costing $2200 have the ability to fire from anywhere on the map to anywhere else on the map. The only unit that is able to do this, it requires the use of snipers in combination with the juggernauts. Using snipers ($1000) to act as scouts, set the snipers to the hold fire stance and use their stealth ability to work your way around your opponents base defences and any stealth detecting units. Once in range of the structure or units you wish to target use the juggernaut bombardment ability. Once the unit or structure has been destroyed press the stop hotkey S to halt any further volleys of artillery shells.

Late game Firehawks can also easily ravange your enemies tech centers or warfactories with 4 of them and take down power plants with 2 of them. If you reach the magic number of 7 you will destroy even super weapons and, more importantly, MCV's! So buying 1 airfield worth of Firehawks is always a good idea if you have the spare cash.
