Player of the Month: arigold

By zebrastripes - 20th September 2011 - 00:49 AM

GameReplays has chosen arigold to feature in this month's Player of the Month. Most will agree that he is one of the best harassers in the game! He has shown us that spams and Bikes do indeed work somehow. His style is quite unique in the way he uses his units and Support powers.

Check out the interview and see what arigold had to share about himself, the way he plays, and his team!

zebrastripes: Well done arigold! Tell us where you're from and how old you are. Could you also provide a picture of yourself?

arigold: I'm 20 years old and from Hungary by heritage but I spend most of my time in Scotland as a student.

zebrastripes: How did you pick up this style of playing, as in spamming only certain units and Support powers? Do you think it works because of how your teammates compliment your style or is there just something about the way you do it? Is your style inspired by other players (active or inactive) in the game?

arigold: I'm not quite sure what you mean by "certain support powers". I tend to use lower tier Support powers with both factions. Mark of Kane is easily removed and I don't trust very high cost Support powers from GDI. I always try to weigh all of my options for Support power usage, whether I'm Eyes of the People spamming or about to do a double Tech Support Drop with my good friend, K.O. As for units, I agree, I spam a lot! That's because C&C 4 is a game and like any game it's supposed to be enjoyed. I spam because I really enjoy doing it.
I think my spam works because it isn't countered properly by my opponents. Nobody really inspired my style of play. In the early days I used to Raider and Bulldog spam all the time, but at the time I hadn't heard of Lobber or the other great harassers. After that my style evolved to match my needs.

zebrastripes: I've seen you play and played with you, and I've noticed that you don't play any Classes like they're meant to be played, especially Support. Do you agree that your style is pure harassment, regardless of your Crawler type?

arigold: I would have agreed to that a year ago when I only went for Raider spams and Tiberium denial. Its true, I really love a good light unit spam with Offense but if it works then it's just another way that Offense is meant to be played. Same with Support, if taking a bunch of Orcas and stopping an enemy tib carrier dead in its tracks will help my team then that's what I will do.
Like ZodiacHeadlock always says, "if it works, it works".

zebrastripes: You're also known for your annoying Bike spam. Are there only certain maps that this works in? What are the deciding factors on when to go Bikes or not?

arigold: When going for a light unit spam then being called "annoying" is the best compliment one can have, so thank you! I often Bike spam on Pipeline Plateau because it's a big map and my bikes will likely have an escape route no matter what. I find the worst map to Bike spam on is Afflicted Arena becuase of the insane amount of enemy Turrets in all the most awkward places. I usually don't start spamming Bikes in the middle of a game, instead I usually open with it to which the map is usually a deciding factor.

zebrastripes: Are you a macro or micro player? Which do you think is more challenging, and is one more important than the other?

arigold: I am definitely more of a micro player. I find macro very difficult because I spam a lot. Macroing and spamming don't go well together because you can't use Q to select all units, which would seriously hinder my micro. Considering how many times your macro, zebra, was the deciding factor in a NTS vs FIMZ game, I'm thinking that macro is more important than micro. Of course micro is really important also because one would lose entire armies without it.

zebrastripes: Who are the players that you consider to be among the best? What makes them the best?

arigold: There are many excellent players but among the best, in my opinion, are zebrastripes, Yukkuri, Lexxx, K.O., Wombat and Cruilty.
Zebra's macro is very often the deciding factor in games she is in. If anyone disputes this just play a game on the same side as Zebra and watch the tib counter. Yukkuri has a 6th sense in this game as in, he always knows what he needs to do, who to help and even anticipates his opponents. Lexxx is undoubtedly the best player when it comes to countering his opponent. He will always build the correct counter and is extremely difficult to beat in 1v1 situations. K.O.'s Support power usage is Godlike, enough said. Wombat's Defense is iron-clad and almost impossible to break alone. Cruilty is perhaps the best player at the moment because of his versatility. He changes Crawlers according to his needs and not his abilities.

zebrastripes: You're part of NTS, tell us what the players are like. Would you agree that NTS is a GDI team?

arigold: I really love NTS and they are quite possible the reason why I still play this game. It is great playing with them because of the atmosphere and of course the skills of the players. During a game we joke around a lot and still stay serious. One instance like this was when a blue Tib was not getting collected and we remarked this on team speak. Michael quickly answered "only if you say please" after which he got the Tib. This was during a very tough game which we just barely won. Wombat is the guy who is always positive about things. He is possibly the most polite person I've known. He always laughs at my jokes even if they are the worst, unfunny jokes I've ever told. I would also like to mention Wombat's dog here, he influences when Wombat is afk a lot and so we all love that dog. K.O. is also a very funny guy who sometimes randomly starts laughing on team speak. When this happens it's usually because we used the same support power at the same place at the same time without having warned each other first. Some say these are accidents but we always insist it's because great minds think alike!

zebrastripes: What's your favourite Class, Crawler, map, and unit?

arigold: It's hard to say what my favourite Class is. I like GDI because it's easier to play than Nod but that's why I like Nod more. Nod is tough to play especially at the start because of the lack of easy ground control but when Nod gets to tier 3, it's a real treat.
I love all Crawlers for various reasons but my favourite is Support. I think Support really has an answer to everything that people throw at it.
My favourite map is Ice Station Omega. I love rushing on this map as GDI but also the classic, 5 player Defense of the blue tib as Nod, this one is extremely difficult to pull off against a coordinated team.
Even though I love bikes, my favourite unit is the Hijacker. I simply love how these girls can change the tide of battle in seconds.

zebrastripes: Do you have any good replays that you would like to share?

arigold:
I love this game because it pushed me to the limit with Offense and also because it was during a tournament. Imagine the pressure!

zebrastripes: You're also a commentator for the C&C 4 section. Which VoD did you most enjoy making? What made it fun to VoD?

arigold: I most enjoyed making the First Person VoD on Frigid Highlands.
FPVoDs are always very fun to do because the fact that I'm recording just adds to the challenge, the unexpected can always happen. I also love the spontaneity of other players during the VoD.

zebrastripes: What are you like outside of C&C 4? Some hobbies, likes, and dislikes?

arigold: I really love the Assassin's Creed series and Crysis 2, both of which I play online. Outside of video games, I really enjoy going out to a club with mates and returning home at 5am. Of course the morning after is quite nasty. I read a lot especially John Grisham. My favourite book from him is Runaway Jury. Anyone read it? I also love playing chess, I enjoy the game's infinite depth. I sometimes think for over an hour of a single move trying to consider all the possible moves. (I'm actually quite a bad player. I lose way more than I win.) My newest hobby is Sanda, which is a Chinese combat sport, very similar to Western Kick-Boxing.

Thanks for your time arigold!
